As the 25th Anniversary of 9/11 approaches, the world is looking back at the kindness and bravery of the folks of Gander, Newfoundland.

COME FROM AWAY is inspired by this true story. Undaunted by culture clashes and language barriers, the people of Gander cheered the stranded travelers with music, an open bar, and the recognition that we’re all part of a global family.

When U.S. airspace was closed on 9/11, grounding 38 international flights on Newfoundland, a small town's residents gave shelter and comfort to 7,000 stranded passengers and crew members – generosity that inspired the musical "Come From Away."

Meet Oz played by Adam Cesarz👮‍♂️

The real Oz Fudge spent over 30 years serving as a police constable in Gander. He famously describes himself as just a
"chubby town cop in Newfoundland" and was one of only two officers keeping the peace in the small community at the time.

When thousands of stranded international passengers ("come from aways") arrived, Oz jumped into action to ensure everyone felt safe, welcome, and cared for. Following the massive global success of COME FROM AWAY, Oz became an accidental celebrity.

Along with his close friend, former high school media teacher Brian Mosher, Oz has traveled all over the world to share Gander's story of humanity and kindness.

Meet Nick and Diane played by Heather Brackeen and Michael Nelaborige 💙💛

Prior to September 11, 2001, Nick and Diane were complete strangers living on different sides of the Atlantic.

Nick was a British oil industry engineer flying to Texas for business, and Diane was a Houston department store buyer returning home after visiting her son in England. Their lives permanently crossed paths when their flight, Continental Airlines Flight 5, was abruptly diverted to Gander. Nick and Diane did not interact during the agonizing first 24 hours spent stuck on the grounded plane. However, once they were allowed to deplane and were taken to an emergency shelter in the nearby town of Gambo, they finally met while waiting in a long line for blankets.

By the time airspace reopened and they had to say their goodbyes, they realized they had fallen deeply in love.

Meet Beverley played by Lee Fuhr ✈

Long before she landed in Gander, Beverley Bass had already carved her name into aviation history by shattering glass ceilings in a heavily male-dominated industry.

Hired by American Airlines in 1976 as a flight engineer, she worked her way up and became the airline's first-ever female commercial captain in October 1986 at just 34 years old. In December 1986, she made history again by commanding the world's first all-female crew on a commercial jet airliner (flying a Boeing 727 from Washington, D.C. to Dallas).

She co-wrote a children's book detailing her life story titled “Me and the Sky: Captain Beverley Bass, Pioneering Pilot” to inspire the next generation of young female aviators.

From chasing her dream of flying to becoming a pioneer in aviation, Beverley's story is one of determination, courage, and breaking barriers.
