Come see "Harold Keller: Portals," our Fall 2023 exhibit on view through December 16!

This first major exhibition on Harold Keller (1928-2017) is based on a transformative donation of the artist’s work to the UAFS Gallery of Art by the Keller family. Consisting of over forty paintings, drawings, ceramics, and artist books, along with a collection of over three-hundred working drawings, the gift makes the university the largest repository of the artist’s work and the largest gift to the gallery to date.

The exhibit also commemorates his influence on the institution as both artist and professor, serving as the first full-time art professor at Fort Smith Junior College (now UAFS) from 1956-1962.

Free and open to the public! Gallery is open 9-4pm weekdays, except University holidays.

The UAFS Gallery of Art and Design is excited to announce a recent major donation and accompanying exhibition coming this Fall 2023!

This first major exhibition on Harold Keller (1928-2017) will be based on a transformative donation of the artist’s work to the permanent collection. Consisting of over forty works including paintings, drawings, ceramics, and artist books, along with a collection of over three-hundred working drawings, the donation makes the university the largest repository of the artist’s work and the largest gift to the gallery to date.

"Harold Keller: Portals" will explore the artist’s whimsical style that fused the fantastic with the everyday. It will also commemorate his influence on the institution as both artist and professor, serving as the first full-time art professor at Fort Smith Junior College (now UAFS) from 1956-1962.

Opening reception is free and open to the public!

Renowned commercial illustrator and graphic artist Alex Williamson from the UK has spent the last four weeks as an artist-in-residence for the Department of Art & Design at UAFS. Working with local museums and collections, he’s been exploring archival materials and uncovering a treasure trove of found imagery that frequently shifts from the weird and/or disturbing to the wonderful.

Through collage and use of the “visual essay,” Williamson’s residency project weaves together thoughts and fragments from the past and present, navigating intersections of history, geography, and politics while exploring the making and remaking of memory, myths, and cultural legacy through Fort Smith’s collections and archives.

Join us for a one-night-only installation of this groundbreaking project in the Cooler Room at the Bakery District, Saturday December 10, 6pm – 9pm!

“Ron Jude: 12 Hz” has been an amazing success, with still over a month remaining.

To celebrate the exhibit and your support, for the remainder of its duration we will be offering student-led tours of the show. Just drop in on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9am-3pm, November 1 through December 9 (excluding Thanksgiving week) and enjoy these 20-minute tours led by our trained gallery assistants! (Tours start every hour.)

Or, take time during your Friday lunch breaks to take an art tour with Gallery Director Matt Bailey.

These 40-minute tours, beginning Fridays at noon, will explore both the exhibit and the permanent collection on display in Windgate Art & Design, introducing you to what the UAFS Gallery of Art has to offer. Email us at [email protected] to sign up! These special guided tours will be offered November 11 and 18th as well as December 2 and 9.

We’re also excited to announce our Spring 2023 exhibition lineup: be sure to mark your calendars for the opening receptions, and be on the lookout for more information on exhibition programming!

A huge day for the UAFS Nursing and Art and Design programs, in addition to the opening of "Ron Jude: 12 Hz"! Join us for our reception this evening in Windgate Art and Design to celebrate the exhibition and our forthcoming expansion, thanks to the generosity of the Windgate Foundation!

After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.

In support of the visual arts, more than $8.8 million will allow UAFS to expand the Windgate Art and Design building, enabling a more immersive public experience of the space and holistic fine arts studios for students and faculty.

“This gift will meaningfully augment every aspect of our department: the ways we educate students in each of our degree programs, the scope of our exhibitions and art collections, and the services and programming we can offer to the River Valley region and to broader art communities,” said Waugh. “This will shape not only how we address our current needs, but will also substantially inform our trajectory going forward.”

“I feel exceptionally grateful, respectfully humble, and ready to get to work,” she said. “It is such a rare, special opportunity to work towards a project that is this transformational, that will have this much impact on each individual student’s education in art and design.

Beginning in 2023, UAFS Art and Design will begin a physical expansion of the Windgate Building, as well as an expansion of curricular offerings through both new courses and broadened existing courses, including book arts, 3D-design, art history, graphic design, gallery and collections, museum preparator training, sculpture, ceramics, and digital fabrication.
