👋 Greetings, Computer Club Members & Friends!

The topics for our next meeting have been chosen! Join us for hands-on tech demos, practical learning, and friendly advice.

📅 When: August 29th | 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM

📍 Where: Fort Plain Library

🐧 Topic #1: Getting to Know Linux

Do you use your computer mainly for news, email, Facebook, YouTube, or basic documents and spreadsheets? If Windows 11 has you frustrated or constant McAfee popups are driving you crazy, you are a prime candidate for switching to Linux.

Try it out: Come take Linux for a test drive and see what all the fuss is about.

Free installation help: If you like it and want to give it a shot, we will help you install it—or install it for you—completely free of charge!

Revive older computers: Got a laptop or desktop that's running too slow for the newest versions of Windows? It will likely run Linux just fine.

🤖 Topic #2: Single-Board Computers (Raspberry Pi & Arduino)

Get a hands-on look at these credit card-sized powerhouses! Learn how these small computers can be used for all sorts of practical and creative projects, including:

Retro arcade gaming

Automatic garden watering systems

Home automation and smart gadgets

Whether you're a total beginner or a seasoned tech tinkerer, everyone is welcome. Bring your questions (and an old laptop if you want to give Linux a try), and we'll see you there!

Persistent McAfee Pop-ups in Microsoft Edge

We've recently seen an influx of users dealing with fake McAfee antivirus pop-ups appearing on the bottom-right corner of their screen. These pop-ups can be tough to close, but here is what you need to know and how to fix them:

What’s causing it?

The Root Cause: Most cases involve using Microsoft Edge while browsing Facebook, where third-party notifications/cookies have been allowed.

It's Malware/Adware, Not a Virus: These are browser notifications designed to trick you. Purchasing standard antivirus software to stop them is usually hit-or-miss.

Built-In Protection: Windows 11 includes built-in antivirus (Windows Defender) that actually does a solid job for basic protection.

How to fix it:
If you want to try fixing it yourself, we recommend using Malwarebytes:

Head over to the official Malwarebytes website and download the Free Trial.

Do not enter any payment info or register an account.

Run a scan to clear out the pop-ups. You can even uninstall it afterward if you wish.

If you frequently deal with browser pop-ups, keeping a paid version installed long-term is worth considering. We are currently setting up volume licensing so we can offer discounted rates on Malwarebytes soon—stay tuned!

PSA If you have a frontier.com email account you will almost certainly get permanently locked out of it at some point. If that sounds like it would ruin your day please come see us at the shop or at the computer club meetings to get some free help on how to get out from under it. It will happen when you get a new device, laptop/phone. or when you use your device somewhere else IE a friends house. or if you change internet providers, It can even happen if there is a power outage and you get a new IP adress when the power comes back on. There seems to be nothing frontier or yahoo can do to help resolve the issue.

🌡️ It’s Too Hot for the Tech!
The Shop is Temporarily Closed Today
We want to be completely straight with you: Our current historic location doesn't have a way for us to install an air conditioning unit.
With today's high temperatures, our repair benches and 3D printers are running way too hot to operate safely during the day. High ambient heat can ruin custom 3D prints and cause electronic components on the diagnostic bench to overheat.

🛠️ What This Means for Your Gear:
3D Print Jobs: All active print queues have been safely paused to prevent warping. They will resume overnight as soon as the shop cools down.
Bench Repairs: Our technicians will be pulling an overnight shift to finish up active laptop, desktop, and hardware repairs under cooler conditions. Your pick-up timeline is still our top priority!

📱 How to Reach Us Right Now:
We are still fully active online and handling customer intake! If you need to drop off a machine, check on a repair, or start a custom print quote:
Grab a Card: Please feel free to take one of our business cards.
Send a Text: You can text our main shop number directly at 716-777-4321
Send an Email: Drop us a line at HelloDdreambit.dev.

We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience, and we appreciate your support of our independent local shop!
