🌊🪸 It's Coral Reef Awareness Week 🪸🌊

Coral reefs cover just 0.2-1% of the ocean floor but play a critical role in providing habitats for marine life, protecting coastlines, and sustaining communities around the world. With rising ocean temperatures, corals experience heat stress which can lead to coral bleaching.

As a part of the Florida Re5 Hub project, scientists here at the Smithsonian Marine Station are exploring if beneficial bacteria can help corals withstand heat stress. The goal of these probiotic experiments is to determine if these bacteria can enhance coral thermal tolerance and reduce bleaching as ocean temperatures rise.

This Coral Awareness Week, celebrate the science and conservation efforts helping coral reefs become more resilient by visiting the Smithsonian Marine Ecosystems Exhibit at the St. Lucie County Aquarium and checking out Florida Re5 Hub!
