This is very true and very well said.
❄️ A gentle reminder about snow days + small business reality ❄️
I know everyone is excited about the snow—and honestly, I get it. There’s something magical about a quiet day at home, kids playing outside, cozy blankets, hot coffee… and for some people it means a rare, much-needed day off work.
But I also want to share something that a lot of people don’t think about when they post “Bring on the snow!” or “I hope we get iced in for a week!”
For many small businesses—especially ones like ours (escape rooms), plus restaurants, bars, entertainment venues, salons, and local boutiques—snow isn’t just a “fun day off.”
It’s devastating.
When the roads are unsafe and people stay home (which they absolutely should), our appointments disappear. We lose a weekend of bookings. Sometimes multiple days. And unlike big companies, we can’t just “make it up later” like it never happened.
For our family and our business, this storm will likely cost us at least a quarter of our revenue this month. That isn’t extra spending money—that’s payroll, rent, bills, and the ability to keep our doors open. It impacts whether we can provide for our family, and whether our staff can count on consistent hours.
And here’s what breaks my heart the most:
That little diner you love?
They might have already been one rent payment away from eviction, and a few snowed-out days could be what finally pushes them under.
That boutique you always shop at?
They may end up having to clearance everything just to stay afloat, and the owner might have to walk away from their dream and go back to a full-time job—not because they failed, but because one storm hit at the wrong time.
That local bar or entertainment spot where you celebrate birthdays and date nights?
They’ll still have the same bills this month… even if the customers couldn’t safely make it out.
So if you’re one of the lucky ones who gets to enjoy a snow day, please do. Truly.
Just remember to be sensitive when you post about it—because for a lot of small businesses, snow isn’t cozy and fun.
It’s survival mode.
And when the roads clear, if you’re able—shop local, reschedule instead of cancel, book the experience, grab dinner at your favorite spot, and support the places that make our community special.
We’re all doing our best out here. ❤️
Stay safe & warm, friends.
