Happy Easter to those who celebrate! We are listening to Handel's Messiah on this holiday, one of his most famous works. This oratorio (large scale work often for choir, orchestra and soloist usually on sacred or biblical themes) was originally composed for Easter in 1741, with the famous "Hallelujah Chorus" celebrating the resurrection, often programmed and performed on Easter. Charlie Chaplin's "The Gold Rush" stars his iconic Little Tramp persona, with inspiration derived from photographs he saw of the Klondike Gold Rush as well as the Donner Party. Believing tragedy and comedy are not that far apart, he decided to combine these tales of horror into a comedy facing all the hazards associated with the search for gold. Did you know Charlie Chaplin was a composer? As one of the leading actors of the silent film era, Charlie Chaplin is one of the most important figures with his iconic screen persona, the Tramp. He also was a director, filmmaker and film editor among which included his feature-length film "The Gold Rush." Most of his films featured music completely composed by him, with "The Gold Rush" being one such film!
