These past weeks, Marina .ag.yoescribo and I have been collaborating on a mural at the Lincoln Center in Fort Collins inspired by Sugar Skull!, a performance about a bilingual, bicultural girl from the Bronx with Mexican roots who initially struggles to embrace her family’s Día de los Mu***os traditions. Our work captures her transformative journey as she travels through “waters of depth,” surrounded by cempasuchil (marigold) flowers, symbolizing guidance and remembrance. She rides on a paper boat, symbolizing the impermanence of life.
The mural’s background—done in chalkboard and doodle style—incorporates symbols from a Día de los Mu***os altar, reflecting a “learning” environment reminiscent of school, as she gradually learns and appreciates her heritage. In the end, she becomes the sugar skull herself, fully embracing and celebrating her traditions.
Working with Marina on this mural was an incredible experience, blending our styles and ideas. Sharing this with my teenage daughter was deeply meaningful, and I hope it will be a cherished memory for her, too. We were also lucky to work alongside talented local artists, sharing techniques, laughter, and inspiration. .raven and Terry McNerney
