Today’s Friendly Face is Tanya Horacek ! Tanya is a vital part of our community, co-chairing our Classes Committee. She is also serving on the Leadership Team, Community Committee, and the Gallery Design Team. She is also a talented mosaic artist whose gorgeous work is featured right here in the gallery.

Tanya and her husband have made Fort Collins their happy retirement home, near the mountains and their daughter in Denver. Since retiring from academia, Tanya has enjoyed volunteering in the community, traveling, leading tours, and challenging her creative side.

While leading a study-abroad class in Italy, she personally got hooked on drawing while encouraging her students to do the same. Ten years ago, a friend taught her how to mosaic, and in 2020 she did her first large mosaic, a Tuscan countryside in her home.

Many of her projects are traditional grouted mosaic pieces but she also uses hand cut glass, as seen in her wildflower mosaics. Some pieces are table-top frames and others are mounted on boxes, mirrors, or other interesting objects.

JoAnn Hovland creates beautiful Fused Glass and Fused Glass Clocks. JoAnn, a Fort Collins native.

An enthusiast of many different creative endeavors, JoAnn received her BA in graphic art from the University of Northern Colorado in 1988 and worked for several companies doing catalog layout. Her second career—certified veterinary technician—began in 1996. The change to “people nursing” came in 2007. The demands of nursing school, followed by working at the hospital, pushed JoAnn’s creative endeavors aside for a few years, but her artistic side never left.

With a nudge from a helpful counselor, and the support of her wonderful husband Tom, JoAnn set out on a mission to revitalize her creative spirit. Through classes at the Blue Moose Art Gallery, JoAnn became intrigued with fused glass. “Being able to take material that is sharp and angry and transform it into a thing of beauty with soft edges is a magical process.” As her skill level matured, JoAnn bought a bigger kiln and loves making fanciful and funky fused glass clocks. A fourth career looms on the horizon.
