SINGER APPLICATION AND INFO (updated February 2012)
Dear Classical Singer,
Thank you for your interest in Opera Fort Collins Guild Arias@Avos casual classical showcase. Following a national trend to present opera in unexpected venues, Arias@Avos presents the finest young artists and professional vocal talent in the region in a family-friendly pub atmosphere. Avogadro's Number Restaurant
605 S. Mason Street
Fort Collins CO 80521

Sponsored by Opera Fort Collins Guild

Arias@Arias was created to:

1) Provide paid performing opportunities, visibility, and respect for regional/local classically-trained professional and semi-professional singers.
2) Introduce opera to new audiences by presenting a variety of classical and non-classical music in a fun, casual, music-friendly venue.
3) Increase the awareness of opera and modern opera singers, while debunking myths and the horns-and-helmet stereotype: ("Opera is boring" "I don't like opera." "Opera is only for old people" "Opera is only for rich people." "Opera is only in Italian or German." "Opera singers can't act." "Opera singers only sing opera.") Bah humbug! Arias@Avos showcase concerts are held the last Sunday of each month, 4-6pm at Avogadro's Number Restaurant concert venue. (The middle room between the dining room and bar.) Typically, there are four featured singers (or a national headliner and three featured singers.) Featured singers are regional pros, emerging pros and young artists. Each featured singer performs 4-5 songs and arias of their choice (plus optional duets, if available.) Singers are encouraged to perform a variety of songs, including opera, art song, and lighter rep such as musical theater or humorous songs. All songs must be performed from memory. Cynthia Vaughn will put together a program order based on the songs titles submitted and Karen Stoody is the professional pianist. There is no rehearsal before the concert, however singers meet briefly with Karen at 3:30 to go over tempos and cuts, etc. Dress is casual, but not sloppy. (no tuxes and gowns, but no torn jeans and-shirts!) Singer's bios are printed for the audience. All songs are announced from the stage by the singers, with a brief description or translation of the song. Keep your song intros SHORT and engaging (not an opera 101 lecture or full synposis!) Singers must be comfortable engaging the audience by speaking, as well as singing, and by utilizing the stage space. A microphone is available onstage for spoken introductions and may also be used for jazz and theater songs, if desired.
