as im anxiously awaiting my trip to (hopefully) see some sandhill cranes on their ancient annual spring migration, i’m also sick to my stomach as people in my own community are being k!lled and disappeared for their own migration, across made up borders.
meanwhile our government is working on building a literal steel wall through the natural wonder that is the Rio Grande and Big Bend National Park, because they’re so full of hate for anyone that doesn’t look or speak or think like them, that they feel the need to contain and control and destroy the earth itself to protect their wh!teness. not only will this wall be an eyesore, it will also destroy and disrupt precious habitat and migration patterns for creatures who cannot fly over it like the sandhill crane.
these cranes have been migrating over this continent, and beyond it for millions of years. they don’t care about the stupid lines that were drawn by men who only seek to profit off of this land. the sandhill cranes (and all other migrating species) don’t give a s**t about your borders, about US law, about papers. they know this earth is our home. our provider. and to divide her up, to contain her children and deny them food, resources or life just because of what side of an imaginary line they were born on - is violence.
for all of my fellow bird nerds and outdoorsy types who are still cherry picking which issues to care about and insisitimg they “don’t like to get political” - it’s all connected. it’s time to get political. it’s time to start caring. showing up for people IS showing up for the planet too.
(note - to be clear, the red white and blue version of this piece is in honor of the country my family emigrated from, for my cousins who are being starved out by the US and the home to a year round population of these amazing birds - cuba 🇨🇺)
