One of my favorite photos of the ballet. But I want to talk for a sec. This experience was an example of do it afraid. I’ve never seen ballet up to this point but I imagined it must be pretty. When I reached out to the ballet company, I figured they’d say no because I had no experience. I did a night of research the night before the rehearsal and that helped me get into the right headspace. But when I got to the auditorium, the impostor syndrome went on overdrive. This was such a unique situation I had never been in. The photographer that was there pulled out his two cameras with fancy gear and I was like oh god I’m way over my head here. He had done all these shows before. Everyone knew more than me. But as soon as I clicked that shutter the first time, it was game time. I know I can take a great photo. But what if I asked to be here and then all my photos flop. The dancers and the stage were often dimly lit which makes my job a lot more difficult. The impostory syndrom thrived . As the performance went, I just let jesus take the wheel. I entered a flow state of taking photos without fear. And wow. These photos turned out to be one of my favorite photography sessions I’ve done. So so many photos that I absolutely LOVE. And so many photos that y’all love as these became my most IG-liked photos of the past 2 years. The ballet provided so many opportunities for great photos and I’m so glad I could capture them. This year I hope to keep leaning into the scary, uncomfortable situations.
