This painting is a beautiful example of contemporary Haitian surrealism / magical realism the dominant style of Frantz Crépin’s works.
Seeing in these photos is a visionary Surrealism, not a naïve Haitian art; but appreciated at most the old masters. At current These upcoming Haitian born Artists like Crépin paints dream-worlds. Forms dissolve into other forms.
The woven-ribbon signature: The lower half is built from thick, interlaced ribbons that coil into fish-like or bird-like bodies — red, white, green, orange, purple, gold. It’s trompe-l’oeil braiding: they look three-dimensional, woven like straw or palm, a nod to Haitian craft tradition reinterpreted as pure imagination.
Spiritual translucence: The upper half opens into cool blues and aquas. Translucent orbs, veiled faces, and a luminous white bird-spirit with outstretched wings emerge from light rays and water. The transformation between physical and the spiritual worlds.
These colors of emotions created by the artist moves from deep oceanic indigo at the bottom to ethereal sky-blue/white at the top — a journey from earth/water to air/spirit. The palette is saturated, luminous, almost stained-glass.
Painted in acrylic on canvas, with very fine blending and highlighting to give the ribbons volume, and soft sfumato for the spirits. Signed lower left “Frantz Crépin.” Presented here in an ornate gold Baroque frame, which heightens the contrast between classical presentation and modern visionary content.
