My film Ophelia was honored with two awards—Best Cinematography and Best Sci-Fi—at the Festival hosted by Macaulay Honors College last night.

Huge thanks to our incredible production and post-production team, whose dedication brought this vision to life—especially actress Allison Plamondon, Rebecca Schall, and the talented Galopecine for their outstanding work.

In the words of Richard Brody, Oh, Canada is a movie about the making of a movie, and this reflexive twist is what sets the film apart. Directed by Paul Schrader, Oh, Canada is both a satirical exploration of the film industry and a deeply introspective meditation on art, vanity and compromise.

Schrader said that he has been making his "last film for about ten years now." He has been thinking about mortality and prayer during this time.

After a breakout year in 2023 that included much-lauded turns in Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest and Justine Triet’s Palme d’Or-winning Anatomy of a Fall, Sandra Hüller isn’t only a cult property worshiped by arthouse goers for her crushing karaoke performance of “The Greatest Love of All” in Maren Ade’s 2016 Toni Erdmann, but also a César winner and Academy Award nominee widely acknowledged as one of the finest actors of her generation.

Ja’Tovia Gary’s THE GIVERNY SUITE is a cinematic poem that advocates for the safety and bodily autonomy of Black women. Gary explains. “Making art is a transformative process that transmutes pain or trauma into something beautiful, useful, functional, instructive.”

A wonderful article on the film About Dry Grasses now showing at the Linconl Center. As Hamrah writes: Long, dense, and elliptical, Ceylan’s films are thorny and difficult, and rousing in their starkness...On a basic level, Ceylan’s movies are a place where, in the future, we will see snow photographed in color once there isn’t any snow (or only computer-generated snow in movies). They will be a way that we remember the reality of the world that once was.

About Dry Grasses is long, dense, elliptical—and brilliant.

“Anatomy of a Fall,” a cerebral trial drama by the director Justine Triet, opens with a mysterious death in the French Alps.

The most important judge in the room is the couple’s pr***en son, Daniel (Milo Machado Graner). Partly blind because of an accident that figures into the case, Daniel is uncomfortable becoming a character in the lawyers’ competing narratives. His poor vision is a metaphor for the struggle to see the truth. A more poetic allusion is how the boy teaches himself piano — not by reading sheet music, but by discovering through trial and error which notes sound right. As a bonus, we hear the passage of time in his improvement.

Did a writer kill her husband? In this cerebral murder trial drama by the director Justine Triet, the audience never has its footing and questions go unanswered.

It was an incredible experience to attend the 2023 NY Youth Media Arts Symposium at the Linconl Center. I’ve always been amazed by the work of academic researcher Heidi Boisvert. Boisvert is a multidisciplinary artist who interrogates the neurological and sociological effects of media and technology. She empowers students, educators and media creators to deconstruct our stories in order to create new narratives. Boisvert said that we don't need to fear AI, but we need to develop our own technology and investigate what is currently available on open-source. This event was possible thanks to Magicbox Productions, New York City Arts in Education Roundtable and the Council on the Arts.

My film Ophelia won Best Sound Design at the Athens International Art Film Festival. I began working on the soundscape for the film in 2018. Initially, I created sound textures by doing experimental recordings at multiple locations using different devices to play with in the editing room. I wanted to create a unique visual language and soundscape to access the supernatural. I started doing research about the use of sound for supernatural folk tales in Japanese cinema during the 1960s-70s by directors like Masaki Kobayashi. In this process, I discovered unique sound elements that I included in the film production and post-production. Finally, in 2021, I created a team and contacted a post-house to do multiple experiments with live recordings, soundscapes, SFX, and more. We worked with talented artists like Luciana Fogo, Galope House, Eunji Jo, and with the Greek music composer Aris Antoniades and completed the project in 2021.
