We're two days away from the incredible opening of "MOJADA" at THEATRE IN THE GROVE, brought to you by Elk Cove Vineyards, Forest Grove Business Solutions, and Apex.
SOFIA MOLINA (Tita) [she/her] enjoyed a privileged life in Mexico City until she finished college and moved to Los Ángeles in 1992.
She flew, no problem at all getting her social security, voting registration, passport, first job, because she also was privileged by being a Gringa citizen from birth. Daughter of a naturalized American, Sofia travelled, studied in Oxford, debuted in The Bilingual Foundation of the Arts in Lincoln Heights in another classical play: "La Celestina", and would go back to Mexico to vacation or see her mom. She also did theater in Boyle Heights, MOJADA's barrio.
Sofia was lucky enough to be friends with people in the original Oregon premiere at Oregon Shakespeare Festival. "The first time I saw MOJADA I was impressed with the emotional strength and variety of all the characters, a true Greco-Chicano tragedy. It moved me to see a full Latino production outside of L.A., and it inspired me to also write some plays and stories about the immigrant-from-Mexico experience."
She has loved Tita ever since and now finally gets a chance to play the role. Sofia's favorite things about her character are, "Her cynicism and funny candor. No nonsense, full love. Genuine sacrifice. She is also sweet, loving, wise and a cabrona who has no qualms about spitting out the harshest truths."
This is Sofia's first show at TitG. "I have seen several great productions here and I think this play will bring a more diverse audience and will shift the perspective of theater goers who just want 'to have a fun time'. MOJADA is life-changing, and makes you think about human nature for many days."
The story of "Mojada" is firmly rooted in the immigrant experience. Unfortunately, immigration (whether "legal" or otherwise) has become a hot button topic that has lead to the dehumanization of immigrants and Latin people in general. So what does Sofia want potential audiences to know about her lived experiences?:
How hard it is to leave everything you love behind. And then go back and miss your U.S. To be torn between two very different lifestyles and cultures. To be an amalgam of languages, loyalties, interests and priorities. It is hard, and work is one of the biggest goals to achieve success. But the sacrifices, discrimination and struggles with education are prevalent. Open your minds and hearts and Latinos will always nurture everyone.
Come see Sofia and all of the other actors tell this gripping story starting THIS FRIDAY.
