Don't miss "Mojada: A Medea in Los Angeles" this weekend or next weekend (shows on Fri & Sat night, & Sunday afternoon). This show is leaving audiences breathless:

"At intermission, people remained in their seats, many wiping away tears."

"I wasn’t sure what to expect from Mojada, but it completely drew me in. The story is powerful, emotional, and surprisingly relevant. The performances were deeply human, and I found myself thinking about the characters long after I left the theatre. It’s the kind of production that sparks conversation and gives you a new perspective .”

"The story follows Medea, a talented seamstress who has fled Mexico with her partner Jason, their young son Acan, and their servant Tita, seeking safety and opportunity in the U.S. But as Medea navigates a new world of exploitation, fear, and cultural dislocation, Jason becomes enticed by the promises of assimilation and success...at a devastating cost."

We're two days away from the incredible opening of "MOJADA" at THEATRE IN THE GROVE, brought to you by Elk Cove Vineyards, Forest Grove Business Solutions, and Apex.

SOFIA MOLINA (Tita) [she/her] enjoyed a privileged life in Mexico City until she finished college and moved to Los Ángeles in 1992.
She flew, no problem at all getting her social security, voting registration, passport, first job, because she also was privileged by being a Gringa citizen from birth. Daughter of a naturalized American, Sofia travelled, studied in Oxford, debuted in The Bilingual Foundation of the Arts in Lincoln Heights in another classical play: "La Celestina", and would go back to Mexico to vacation or see her mom. She also did theater in Boyle Heights, MOJADA's barrio.

Sofia was lucky enough to be friends with people in the original Oregon premiere at Oregon Shakespeare Festival. "The first time I saw MOJADA I was impressed with the emotional strength and variety of all the characters, a true Greco-Chicano tragedy. It moved me to see a full Latino production outside of L.A., and it inspired me to also write some plays and stories about the immigrant-from-Mexico experience."

She has loved Tita ever since and now finally gets a chance to play the role. Sofia's favorite things about her character are, "Her cynicism and funny candor. No nonsense, full love. Genuine sacrifice. She is also sweet, loving, wise and a cabrona who has no qualms about spitting out the harshest truths."

This is Sofia's first show at TitG. "I have seen several great productions here and I think this play will bring a more diverse audience and will shift the perspective of theater goers who just want 'to have a fun time'. MOJADA is life-changing, and makes you think about human nature for many days."

The story of "Mojada" is firmly rooted in the immigrant experience. Unfortunately, immigration (whether "legal" or otherwise) has become a hot button topic that has lead to the dehumanization of immigrants and Latin people in general. So what does Sofia want potential audiences to know about her lived experiences?:

How hard it is to leave everything you love behind. And then go back and miss your U.S. To be torn between two very different lifestyles and cultures. To be an amalgam of languages, loyalties, interests and priorities. It is hard, and work is one of the biggest goals to achieve success. But the sacrifices, discrimination and struggles with education are prevalent. Open your minds and hearts and Latinos will always nurture everyone.

Come see Sofia and all of the other actors tell this gripping story starting THIS FRIDAY.

"MOJADA" opens this week, brought to you by our gold sponsors Elk Cove Vineyards, Forest Grove Business Solutions, and Apex!

CASSANDRA PANGELINAN (Armida) [she/hers] made her TitG debut exactly 10 years ago! What brought her back? "I've always had a soft spot for TitG. I have friends to this day because of Theatre in the Grove, but the timing never seemed to line up to return. Thanks to Zoe and Sophina's trust in me, I was brought into this project, and I'm so grateful it worked out. I really am honored to be part of this cast and this story."

What can she tell us about her character Armida? "My character is from Mexico and has humble origins, but has since made quite a name for herself. She is a boss lady and buys properties all over town. She's used to getting what she wants and doesn't have a lot of morals getting her way. A line that I think exemplifies her motivations, 'That is something you learn in this country, to take pride and credit for the things that you do. Back home we are taught humility and silence, that doesn't work here. It's a sign of weakness.'"

"Mojada" is an incredibly timely story and Cassandra had this to say about it: This story is amazing. It exemplifies feelings that are so inherently human: feeling othered, trying to belong, trying to find home. While these are relatable, human and honest, it's ultimately still a story rooted in the immigrant experience. That experience has been so vilified by the current climate and administration. Not only does this experience deserve to be heard, it ought to be shouted and celebrated from the rooftops."

We hope to have every member of our community in the audience to experience the magic that is "Mojada", opening THIS FRIDAY.

As Mojada approaches, we're here with some actor (and this time, director) spotlights! Thanks to our gold sponsors Elk Cove Vineyards, Forest Grove Business Solutions, and Apex for supporting this season!

SOPHINA FLORES (director) is the founder of local QTPOC dance theatre company Roots and All Theatre Ensemble, centering marginalized identities and breaking the boundaries of realism.

Her directorial debut at Theatre in the Grove, Sophina was drawn to "The rich prose - you can tell the second you start reading it what a masterpiece it is. It's a very well known work, and it was an honor to be asked to direct it."

For those familiar with the word "mojada," some may be caught off guard, but Sophina explains the importance of that title:

"Mojada" is a slur used for Mexican immigrants, particularly undocumented ones. It translates to wet, in this case "we***ck" which originated in the 1920s to refer to those who swam across the Rio Grande from Mexico to Texas. Luis Alfaro chose it because he wanted to reclaim this word he had hear since childhood and offer it new meaning.

And with a script as important and brilliant as "Mojada", Flores has a lot to work with as the director. "The most challenging parts have definitely been finding the use of the Nahuatl language and prayers and integrating them into the story respectfully. I am Puerto Rican, and our Medea is Columbian, so these are not a part of our cultural history, and we wanted to do our work well. The most rewarding parts have been the relationship between Jason and Medea and its constant tension, how it grows and evolves, and finding all of the nuances within."

Make sure to come see "Mojada" opening in one week at Theatre in the Grove!
