Tala Shruti School of Dance

Tala Shruti School of Dance Tala Shruti was founded in 1995 in New Jersey with a focus on teaching Bharatanatyam. Bharatanatyam is the art form of Classical Indian dance.

The dance school is led by artistic director Renuka Srinivasan, an accomplished Bharatanatyam dancer who had her advanced training in Madras, India. We are currently located in the historic, 100-year-old Fords Firehouse.

Mastery is found in the balance.

Where every movement is precise, yet never feels mechanical.
Where the body holds the discipline, and the eyes hold the emotion.

That is the beauty of Bharatanatyam - precision you can see, expression you can feel.

An Arangetram may last a few hours, but the journey behind it shapes a dancer for much longer.

For Ishani Singh, it meant a year of relentless practice, nine pieces, countless challenges, and a deeper love for Bharatanatyam.

A special part of that journey was the guidance of Guru Renuka Srinivasan, whose dedication pushed Ishani beyond what she thought she could do and helped her discover new depth in every piece.

And for Ishani, the Arangetram was never the destination.

It was only the first step.

If this pose could speak, would you hear a story… or feel an emotion?

In Bharatanatyam, words are not always necessary.

A glance can reveal what the heart cannot say.
A gesture can become a conversation.
A moment of stillness can hold an entire world within it.

And perhaps that is what makes this art so captivating - you don't have to know every step to feel what it is saying.

Some stories are heard.
Some are read.
And some are simply seen.

Every accomplished dancer was once a beginner who simply chose to begin.

At Tala Shruti School of Dance, Bharatanatyam is more than movement - it's a journey of discipline, confidence, expression, and cultural heritage. Every class builds not just a dancer, but a stronger, more expressive individual.

Fall Admissions are now open. If you've been waiting for the perfect time to begin, this is your moment.

You don't earn these poses in a day.

They are built through thousands of hours.
Through aching muscles.
Through unwavering discipline.
Through countless repetitions that no audience ever sees.

Only then does strength become grace.
Only then does precision become expression.
Only then does movement become storytelling.

And only then...

do we call it Bharatanatyam.
