Galapagos Puppet Theater brings The Blazing Fire Mountain and Its Princess, A Monkey King Tale to Flushing Town Hall on Saturday, September 19. This beloved episode from the 400-year-old Chinese epic “Journey to the West” follows Monk Tang and his disciples as they use transformation, persuasion, and puppet martial arts to win back the one thing that can save their journey.

The story comes alive with live music on erhu, p**a, guzheng, and percussion from celebrated folk musician Jimmy Zhao, who has spent over 30 years bringing Chinese folk music to audiences across the U.S.

There will be two shows, 11 AM and 2 PM, with a Q&A in Chinese at the 2 PM performance featuring a master of Taiwanese puppetry. A meaningful outing for adults and kids alike, or anyone who would love to see this centuries-old art form up close.

Saturday’s show was truly a night to remember! Thank you to everyone who attended Spirits from Both Sides: Arturo O’Farrill x Vincent Hsu. We witnessed incredible performances by Vincent Hsu 徐崇育, Arturo O'Farrill & the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra. Then, we ended the night with a post-show talk, moderated by former Executive Director of the National Jazz Museum in Harlem, Tracy Hyter-Suffern. Together, we celebrated the fusion of two cultures into a night of great music and dancing!

A very special thank you to Belongó Afro Latin Jazz and Taipei Cultural Center in New York.

Flushing Town Hall is happy to announce the expansion of our GO Queens Grant!

With the new funding, the GO Queens Grant will build on the groundwork provided by the Howard Gilman Foundation, and awards will move from a one- to a two-year funding cycle for eligible organizations, with $20,000 in total award funding available to awardees. The funds will support Queens-based arts and culture nonprofits with annual operating budgets under $250,000 for whom the performing arts are a core focus. Combined funding from both foundations will enable FTH to expand from 25 to 46 grantees. These two-year awards will give organizations the runway to plan ahead, deepen their programs, and build long-term sustainability.

This past weekend, we came together for Mapping Queens: Voices Behind the Festivals to hear directly from the people doing the work. We learned how their festivals came to life, the challenges they’ve had to navigate, and the advice they have for others hoping to create something of their own. What a truly special way to reconnect! 🌟

We’re so grateful to our panelists for being open about their experiences and for sharing the realities behind building cultural events in Queens!

A big thank you to our moderators, Natalie Bedon, Project Manager for the Queens Cultural Mapping Initiative, and Adrian Cepeda, owner of The World's Borough Bookshop. It was an honor to host this program at the bookshop during their third anniversary weekend. 🥳

And a big shoutout to Sabor Limeno NY for the delicious Peruvian food, and to everyone who helped make this event possible!

Through Mapping Queens, we’re excited to continue bringing artists, cultural workers, and community members together for conversations that celebrate the people shaping arts and culture across our borough.

Save the date for our next event on Wednesday, September 16—more to come!
