Teen Newsroom at the June Bug Center is FREE for ages 15–18, and we’re building something big:

🎤 Interview real people
🔎 Research real stories
✍️ Write & edit
📸 Create media
📰 Produce a complete teen-led publication
🗞️ And potentially see your work published with The Floyd Times

Basically: you make the news.

And you’ll be learning from John X. Volaitis, a media producer, journalist, broadcaster, editor, and music/entertainment industry veteran with 40+ years of experience working across journalism, broadcasting, podcasting, film, television, and music.

His career has included editorial collaboration with major networks and projects involving ESPN, Fox News LA, Sky News UK, Condé Nast, The Rolling Stones, P!nk, and David Bowie.

Yeah. That’s your instructor.

And when it comes time for college applications? Having actual journalism, media, interviewing, writing, and publishing experience in your portfolio is a pretty great thing to be able to say:

“I helped create and publish a real news publication.”

🐞Fall is officially underway at the June Bug Center—and WOW, what a start! 🎉

Our classrooms are buzzing, the theatre is coming alive, and it has been SO GOOD seeing familiar faces alongside so many new ones! 💛

But there’s still time to join us!

So… What exactly is STEAM? 🤔💡

STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts & Mathematics—but at the June Bug, it’s really about giving Floyd County kids the chance to build, experiment, create, problem-solve, and ask “What if?”

In a rural community, access to hands-on technology and engineering opportunities can sometimes mean leaving Floyd County. We believe our kids shouldn’t have to.

Through robotics, coding, computers, engineering, and more, our STEAM students get to try things, break things, figure things out, and try again.

Because learning isn’t always about having the right answer.

Sometimes it’s about learning how to find it.

🐞WE’RE BACK! 🐞

The lobby is about to get a whole lot louder.

Today marks the first day of Fall classes at The June Bug Center! We’re so excited to welcome our students back for another semester of creativity, music, theatre, dance, STEAM, and plenty of after-school adventures.

Whether they’re stepping onto the stage, building something awesome, picking up an instrument, coding their first project, or making new friends, we can’t wait to see what this semester brings. 💛

And if you’ve been thinking, “Hmm… maybe we should sign up for a class…” —there’s still time! A few spots remain in several Fall programs, so you can still join the fun this week.

🤖 GOT A KID WHO IS ALWAYS TAKING THINGS APART?

Good news: we have a place for them.

This fall, JBC is bringing back a whole lineup of hands-on STEAM classes designed for kids who would rather build it, code it, test it, and figure out how it works than just read about it.

🧱 LEGO CLUB
Build. Create. Experiment. And yes, probably step on a LEGO or two.
🤖 ROBOTICS CLUB
Design and program robots while learning real engineering and problem-solving skills.
💻 COMPUTER CLUB
Explore computers through hands-on projects, Minecraft missions, Piper Computer, and Pipercode.
🔧 GADGET LAB
Our revamped Junior Engineers class is all about tinkering, building, experimenting, and figuring out how things work.
🐍 KIDS WHO CODE
A hands-on introduction to programming and Python for kids ready to start creating with code.

These aren't classes where kids just sit and listen. They make things. They solve problems. They experiment. They fail, try again, and figure it out.

Classes start August 31 and we have 29 more students to go to hit our Fall enrollment goal!
