Happening this weekend! Floyd Artisan Trail Floyd Center for the Arts

Tomorrow, 22 artisans across 16 locations will open their studios, galleries, workshops, and creative spaces for the 16th Annual Floyd Artisan Trail.

Spend the day winding through the Blue Ridge Mountains as you visit potters, jewelers, painters, mosaic artists, photographers, woodworkers, instrument makers, and more. Watch demonstrations, participate in hands-on workshops, and discover one-of-a-kind handmade work directly from the makers.

Along the way, enjoy local shops, food, lodging, farms, and Artful Adventure destinations that make Floyd such a special place to visit.

"You have so many butterflies!" commented a recent guest.

We were also excited to spot our first Monarch butterfly of the season this weekend.

At Buffalo Mountain Ziplines, we practice a conservation-minded approach to managing our meadow areas. Rather than mowing throughout the growing season, we mow only the paths needed to access the platforms and leave the remaining meadows undisturbed until late fall, after plants have naturally reseeded. This creates valuable habitat for a wide variety of pollinators, including butterflies, native bees, and other beneficial insects.

This time of year, our meadows are especially alive with butterflies. In addition to Monarchs, we've been seeing large numbers of smaller orange butterflies that are likely Pearl Crescents, one of Virginia's most common meadow butterflies, as well as Easter Tiger Swallowtails.

Over the years, we've also installed numerous bird boxes throughout the property, particularly for Eastern Bluebirds, along with a duck box near the pond. We've scattered milkweed seeds far and wide to support Monarch butterflies, whose caterpillars depend exclusively on milkweed as a host plant.

The results have been rewarding. We've noticed a significant increase in butterflies, birds, and small mammals, and guests often comment on the abundance of wildlife they encounter while soaring through the trees.

It's a reminder that outdoor recreation and conservation can go hand in hand. The forest isn't just our workplace—it's also home to an incredible variety of wildlife, and we're proud to do our small part to help it thrive.
