Ireland's data centers are now consuming almost as much electricity as every home in the country combined.

New figures from Ireland's Central Statistics Office show that data centers used 7,663 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity in 2025, accounting for 23% of the country's total electricity consumption.

By comparison, all residential homes — including urban and rural households — used 28%.

Just a decade ago, data centers accounted for only 5% of Ireland's electricity use. Since 2015, their share has grown by 360%, driven by the rapid expansion of cloud computing and, more recently, artificial intelligence.

Ireland has become one of Europe's largest data center hubs despite having a population of only about five million people. Around 89 data centers operate in the country, most clustered around the Greater Dublin Area and owned by companies including Microsoft, Amazon Web Services, Google, and Meta.

The surge in electricity demand has raised concerns about pressure on Ireland's power grid. In 2021, regulators effectively halted new grid connections for many data centers around Dublin because of fears that electricity demand could outpace available capacity.

Although that policy has since been replaced, new large data centers must now provide their own flexible on-site power generation and source at least 80% of their annual electricity from new renewable energy projects within six years.

The International Energy Agency previously projected that data centers could consume about one-third of Ireland's electricity by 2026. With data centers already accounting for 23% of the country's electricity use in 2025, that prediction remains within reach.

The figures highlight how the infrastructure powering cloud services and artificial intelligence is becoming one of the largest consumers of electricity in entire countries, fueling an ongoing debate over energy demand, grid capacity, and the future of digital infrastructure.

A small town in the American heartland just delivered a historic electoral shock over infrastructure. Residents in Festus, Missouri, voted out four city council members in an absolute sweep after local leaders approved a massive six billion dollar artificial intelligence data center.

This stunning local clean sweep reveals how everyday citizens are actively reshaping the physical blueprint of the modern digital landscape.

According to local voting data and municipal election records, the grassroots campaign successfully ousted the incumbent leaders just a week after they authorized rezoning three hundred sixty acres for the computing complex. The political fallout has since expanded into ongoing legal challenges and a certified push for a secondary recall election targeting the city mayor.

The conflict boils down to how these hyper scale technology hubs operate. While city officials frequently look to data centers for direct tax revenue, residents often push back due to the intensive local resources required to power and cool thousands of artificial intelligence chips. These multi building structures require immense electrical grids and millions of gallons of water, sparking immediate fears of spiking utility rates and local environmental depletion.

This intense civic pushback signals real world friction for computing firms hoping to build regional facilities quickly. It shows that future technological expansion cannot rely solely on corporate funding without first securing strong public consent and addressing community resource impacts.

Tech companies must prioritize transparent, grid independent power solutions and advanced waterless cooling systems to avoid total project gridlock.

👋💯 The only thing worth celebrating about about the 250th is that we got rid of a king. And now we have to do it again.

Trump has turned 250th anniversary from a moment of great pride to a dredge of embarrassment. From self aggrandising arches, to $250 bills with his face illegally on it, to destroying the White House lawn so that he can put two men fighting for his pleasure, into a cage.

This has nothing to do with our country. And everything to do with him. Exactly the way he likes it.

Any celebration of America can not be a celebration of him
