Trying to tune in on FM today and hearing stations that definitely aren’t local? You’re not imagining it!

If you’ve noticed unfamiliar voices, music, or even station names showing up where your favorite local station should be, you’re experiencing a fascinating phenomenon called FM radio skip (also known as Sporadic E propagation).

Normally, FM stations travel only about 30–70 miles. But every so often, conditions high in Earth’s atmosphere create a temporary “mirror” that reflects radio signals hundreds, or even more than 1,000 miles away.

Today, we’ve heard stations from Duluth, Minnesota, Grand Forks, North Dakota, and De Pere, Wisconsin—all on 92.9 fm on a radio here in The Shoals!

These unusual conditions can last anywhere from a few minutes to several hours before everything returns to normal.

Have you picked up a station from far away today? Tell us the frequency, what you heard, and (if you know) where it was from. We’d love to compare what listeners across the area are finding!

Today, we honor Juneteenth, a day marking the end of slavery in the United States and a celebration of freedom, resilience and hope.

Observed each year on June 19, Juneteenth commemorates the day in 1865 when news of emancipation finally reached enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued.

As communities across the country gather to celebrate, we remember the importance of history, reflect on the ongoing pursuit of equality and equity, and honor the generations who have helped shape our nation.

Happy Juneteenth.
