1940: Woody Guthrie wrote the lyrics to 'This Land Is Your Land' in his room at the Hanover House Hotel in New York City. The song was brought back to life in the 1960s, when several artists of the new folk movement, including Bob Dylan, The Kingston Trio, Trini Lopez, Jay and the Americans, and The New Christy Minstrels all recorded versions, inspired by its political message.

1944: American singer and guitarist Johnny Winter was born (John Dawson Winter III) in Beaumont, Texas. Winter worked with his brother Edger Winter and Rick Derringer. He produced three Grammy Award-winning albums for blues singer and guitarist Muddy Waters. Winter died at the age of 70 on 16 July 2014 in Zurich, just days after playing at the Lovely Days Festival in Austria.

Many see this as his most important contribution to country music. No matter how you look at it, the Nudie Suit-wearing country crooner is a legend.

2004: Don Cornell, a Big Band singer who scored a string of hits during the 1950s and early 1960s including "It Isn't Fair," died, he was 84. Cornell got his start with trumpeter Red Nichols and Big Band leader Sammy Kaye before launching a successful solo career. Between 1950 and 1962, Cornell chalked up hits such as "It Isn't Fair," "I'm Yours," "The Bible Tells Me So," "Most of All," "I'll Walk Alone" and "Hold My Hand."

2005: A lack of business forces the legendary Muscle Shoals Studio in Sheffield Alabama to close its doors. The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Aretha Franklin were among the legends that recorded there.

He is also famous as the creator of the Jimmy Dean sausage brand. Billy Sherrill, Don Williams, and Ferlin Husky were all also inducted.

2010: London's Abbey Road studios was made a listed building, protecting it from plans to radically alter it. Culture Minister Margaret Hodge listed the studios on the advice of English Heritage saying it had "produced some of the very best music in the world". The Beatles used Abbey Road for 90% of their recordings. The studio was origanally named EMI Studios, they changed the name to Abbey Road Studios in 1970 because of The Beatles album.

2015: Marlene Barrow-Tate, one of the studio stars of Motown for many years, died at the age of 73. Barrow was a member of the Andantes, which sang backing vocals on many memorable songs such as "Love Child" by the Supremes. Barrow-Tate also sang for Stevie Wonder, Temptations, Marvelettes, Jimmy Ruffin, Edwin Starr, Brenda Holloway. Marvin Gaye, Four Tops, Mary Wells', Jackie Wilson, and Martha & the Vandellas. Barrow-Tate also filled in for Florence Ballard at concerts by the Supremes. The Andantes were inducted into the Rhythm and Blues Music Hall of Fame in 2014.
