Whenever I see a mola in an estate, I know that the individual who lived here has been to Panama or Columbia.

Molas are made by the Kuna women (also known as Cuna or Guna) and they are an integral part of their daily dress. They are made using reverse applique and applique, with up to seven layers of colorful cloth. The shapes are carefully cut away and the edges hand stitched to show intricate patterns that often tell a story.

An interesting side note ... in 1925, the Kuna fought what is known as the "Mola War," a revolution to defend their right to wear their traditional dress and preserve their culture.

They won ;)

I have added a photo in the first comment below I took on my last trip to Panama City showing a Kuna woman in her traditional dress, sporting a mola very similar to the framed one in this estate.
