Painting leaves and flowers this week with my students. We talked about the octaval leap the plants make when they put up a flower. Flowers are really just showier leaves. Same note, but in a higher octave! We practice drawing the leaf forms from various angles, flat, curled over, etc. Then we dive into the pencil drawing of the entire composition, ink the outlines with micron pen, and paint it in! We started with elipses last week and just drawing the empty flower pot. Now, in my technique of building the skills as we go, we already know "flower pot" and how to create the light and shadow on that simple form. Having a visual vocabulary requires building knowledge of how to render different forms, so we "build" to a complete composition over a few weeks of studying the various parts. It's exciting to add the leaves and flowers now! So fun!

Studies I did for one of my students in building up a surface. The red one is first, then blue and red to add depth, then adding colors straight from the tube as they attracted, then mixing colors and bringing out color contrasts such as between the greenish blue and the reddish orange.
