During the public hearing today comments were submitted by two residents. Those comments urged the lowering of taxes and for the city to cut back where possible. One item suggested for cuts was the Florence Aquatic Center. The resident cited that they were able to purchase a home with a pool for their child. I think that is great. However, what about all the other children and adults in Flornece?

I spent my summers swimming as much as possible. I went to friend’s pools and the public pool where I lived. We could not afford a pool of our own. When I had my own children we purchased a membership to the Florence Aquatic Center each summer. As a single mom working 40 hours a week and barely making ends meet the FAC gave my kids great summers. They learned to swim, stayed active and socialized. I believe with all my being that EVERY CHILD DESERVES ACCESS TO A POOL DURING THE SUMMER MONTHS. I will never waiver in my support of our aquatic center. We already spent millions of dollars to build it and it does not make sense to spend millions of dollars to tear it down. Public pools decrease juvenile crime rates and are safer than private pools or other water sources like lakes.

I look forward to voting for a decrease of the city tax rate as recommended. I share sentiments of careful spending and helping our residents by saving them on their taxes. I do believe there is opportunity to increase revenue at the FAC to offset the costs of the pool to our tax paying residents. I hope you will join me in support of the Florence Aquatic Center. I encourage other cities to invest in public pools for their residents because your residents deserve access to aquatics as well.

🎉 Monday, July 28:
Waddle you doing today? Don’t miss the Penguin Encounter from 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.! The Wave Foundation from the Newport Aquarium is bringing a real-life penguin for students in grades K–7 to meet up close.

🍧 Tuesday:
Cool down with 25¢ popsicles — the perfect treat for a sunny day at the pool!

🌀 Wednesday, July 30:
It’s a double feature!
