OPEN AUDITION NOTICE: All students, faculty, and staff are welcome to audition for the fall production, Sarah Ruhl’s Dead Man’s Cell Phone directed by William Irwin, opening October 16 on the university main stage.

WHEN: Monday, August 31st, and Tuesday, September 1st, at 6pm. No appointments. All are asked to attend at 6pm.
WHERE: UM-Flint Theatre Main Stage
WHAT TO PREPARE: Theatre Majors/Minors – a one-minute contemporary monologue. Non-Theatre Majors will be provided material to share at the audition.

IMPORTANT DATES/TIMES
Rehearsals: Weekday evenings. First Rehearsal: Thursday, September 3rd Production Dates: October 16, 17, 18, 23, 24, 25

ROLES AVAILABLE
JEAN: A shy, isolated, lonely woman whose life is transformed after answering a dead man’s cell phone.
GORDON: A charismatic, enigmatic businessman whose death, and lingering presence, sets the story in motion.
DWIGHT: Gordon’s thoughtful, kind-hearted brother, quietly searching for genuine connection and purpose.
HERMIA: Gordon’s glamorous, witty, and eccentric widow, masking loneliness with confidence and charm.
MRS. GOTTLIEB: Gordon’s fiercely devoted, larger-than-life, oddly eccentric mother, equal parts hilarious, heartbreaking, and unforgettable.
THE OTHER WOMAN / STRANGER: A mysterious, confident woman who reveals unexpected truths and guides Jean toward self-discovery.
ENSEMBLE: various non-speaking, movement based roles

After a man dies quietly in a café, an ordinary woman answers his endlessly ringing cell phone and finds herself entangled in the lives of his grieving family, mysterious past, and unexpected romance. Sarah Ruhl's inventive comedy explores identity, morality, grief, and our universal longing to connect, weaving together absurd humor with surprising emotional depth. Equal parts quirky, poetic, and profoundly human, Dead Man's Cell Phone reminds us that every life leaves echoes in the people who answer the call.

PLEASE NOTE: The characters of JEAN and DWIGHT develop a romantic relationship that includes affectionate physical contact and a staged kiss. These moments will be rehearsed with clear communication, consent, and respect. Director William Irwin has training in intimacy coordination and is committed to creating a safe and collaborative environment.

ALL UM-Flint students of ALL ethnicities, gender identities, and ages, as well as students with disabilities, are encouraged to audition.

Have you noticed our new artwork in the lobby? The Shakespeare Globe tapestry has been removed for cleaning and will eventually be returned, but in its place we are honored to display El ANATSUI beautiful tapestry called “Still More Came Back” from 2005. It is a part of the The Mott-Warsh Collection & MW Gallery and we will have it on display for the 26-27 academic year. Thank you to U-M Arts Initiative for their financial support to make this display happen.
