After twenty-five years living in Brooklyn, Melissa Murray returned to the Catskills with renewed awareness of the more than human world. Daily life became inseparable from tending native gardens, walking directly from home into forests and waterfalls, foraging, following the movement of the stars and planets, and raising her son within these rhythms. The relationship is one of reciprocity. Plants are chosen as much for birds, insects, and wildlife as for beauty. The landscape is walked, cared for and listened to. It is not simply observed, it is lived with.

Darkness is never treated as emptiness, nor as something to overcome. Instead, it becomes the condition in which perception expands. Night reveals relationships that remain unnoticed in daylight, softening the distinctions that ordinarily separate one form of life from another. Human consciousness no longer occupies the center of experience but becomes one awareness among many.
This shift is evident throughout the series, as seen in ‘What it Means to Walk With You,’ where the trees develop eyes. In other works. Flowers possess an undeniable presence, and rivers reflect the sky until water and air become nearly indistinguishable.

Light Lives as an Animal on view now through September 20, 2026

Meanings remain intentionally unresolved in this series of paintings. They may be read as architecture, ritual objects, fragments of sky, or simply acts of paintings. Their persistence throughout the series allows them to function less as symbols than as acknowledgments that ordinary perception is the beginning to give way to another way of seeing. The deer rib cage offers perhaps the clearest expression of this philosophy. Rather than presenting bone as evidence of death, the painting transforms it into architecture. Beyond the ribs, distant lights punctuate the darkness. Their identity remains intentionally uncertain, resisting the impulse to resolve wonder into explanation. What once enclosed breath now opens toward mystery.

Again and again, the paintings return to thresholds. Some are obvious: luminous colbalt arches standing quietly within forests, circles of blue light suspended in space, reflections that blur sky and water. Others are quieter. These thresholds are not portals elsewhere. They do not promise escape into another world. Instead, they suggest that reality itself is composed of continuous transitions. Dawn is a threshold, sleep is a threshold, grief is a threshold. Growth, decay, migration, memory, and renewal all exist not as a fixed conditions but as movements between them. The recurring colbalt arches embody this idea of quiet consistency. Their meaning remains intentionally unresolved.

There are moments in the woods, particularly at dusk or long after nightfall, when the world seems to reorganize itself. Familiar paths become uncertain. Distance becomes difficult to judge. Animals emerge that remain hidden during the day. Sounds travel differently. Even light appears to possess its own habits, gathering unexpectedly before disappearing again. It is easy to dismiss these experiences as tricks of perception. It is equally possible to wonder whether daylight has simply taught us to notice less. Light Lives as an Animal grows from that uncertainty.

“Light Lives as an Animal” is a body of night paintings rooted in the forests of the Catskills, where native plants and animals emerge through darkness guided by instinct, memory, and subtle illumination. She paints from observation, intuition, and lived experience, attending to the ways light behaves beyond utility, moonlight, fire, bioluminescent suggestion, reflected glow, and spiritual or imagined sources. In these paintings, light is not passive; it moves, hides, startles, and watches, behaving as a living presence rather than a fixed phenomenon. Flora and fauna become both subjects and witnesses, existing in a charged nocturnal space where visibility is partial and perception is heightened. The work explores night as a site of vulnerability, reverence, and transformation, honoring the unseen rhythms of the Catskills landscape and the quiet intelligence that animates it after dark.
