Flat Rock Playhouse

Flat Rock Playhouse The Official Page of Flat Rock Playhouse, The State Theatre of North Carolina. So successful was that summer, they returned in 1941.
(1044)

In 1937, a group of struggling performers, led by Robroy Farquhar, organized themselves as the Vagabond Players. The Vagabonds worked in a variety of places over the course of three years, and in 1940 found themselves in the Blue Ridge region of Western North Carolina. The local and tourist community welcomed them with open arms when they presented their first summer season of plays in a 150-year-

old grist mill they converted into The Old Mill Playhouse at Highland Lake. After WWII, the Vagabond Players reorganized, came back to the region and opened a playhouse in nearby Lake Summit. The Lake Summit Playhouse thrived during the post-war years and soon the Vagabond Players were looking for a larger and permanent home. In 1952, the troupe of performers, and a newly formed board of directors, made an offer to buy an 8-acre lot in the Village of Flat Rock. This new home made the Vagabonds “locals” and a rented big top gave birth to the Flat Rock Playhouse. As the beautiful Western Carolina region continued to grow, so did the Playhouse and in 1961, by Act of the North Carolina General Assembly, Flat Rock Playhouse was officially designated The State Theatre of North Carolina. What began as a few weeks of summer performances in 1940 is now a nine-month season of plays including Broadway musicals, comedy, drama, and theatre for young audiences. The Playhouse’s dual mission of producing the performing arts and providing education in the performing arts includes a professional series, a summer and fall college apprentice and intern program, year-round classes and workshops for students from kindergarten through adults. Flat Rock Playhouse now hosts over 98,000 patrons annually and is a significant contributor to the local economy and the Arts in North Carolina.

Last night, RENT took its final bow.

To our extraordinary cast - thank you for your talent, your generosity, and the incredible work you brought to this production night after night. It has been a joy to have you on our stage, and we are so grateful for all that you brought to Flat Rock.

To our crew, orchestra, and creative team, box office, ushers and amazing volunteers- thank you for the hundreds of hours of work that happened long before the curtain rose and continued through every performance. For every rehearsal, cue, note, change, and detail that it took to bring this production to the stage, and for the extraordinary skill and care you brought to all of it.

And to everyone who joined us in the audience - thank you for showing up for this production in such a tremendous way. For filling our theatre, for bringing friends and family, for returning to see it again, and for allowing us to share this story with you. The response to RENT has meant an enormous amount to all of us at Flat Rock Playhouse, and we are deeply grateful that you were part of it.

No day but today.

On Monday evening we held our annual Gala Fundraiser at the Boys & Girls Club of Henderson County, and we're so grateful for the amazing turnout and incredible generosity of our patrons!

The theme for this year's event was Prom: Decades on the Dance Floor, and our patrons and staff showed up in their absolute 50's. 60's, 70's, and 80's best!

Special thanks to our sponsors for the evening: LS3P and Southern Alarm & Security and of course the Boys and Boys & Girls Club of Henderson County for helping our production team transform their gymnasium into a Prom wonderland.

Thanks as well to our Playhouse staff and patrons and the incomparable Nat Zegree. And to Blake Ellege Music and his fantastic band for keeping the dancing going all night long!
