CMC’s ArtX performance this year opened with a bright, lively dance originally choreographed by Abigail Pye. The original piece, called Embers, was designed to portray the moment “when all of the big flames have died down and you’re left with just a few embers. All it would take is [a little breeze] and some sparks to set off another flame.” Abigail described the energy of the dance as one of “[hidden] power - in its ability to be so quiet when it could [so easily] create more.”

Adapted for the theme of the Flower Moon, the revised piece, Sprouts, retains a majority of the original choreography but is adapted to portray eager seedlings shooting up out of the soil, strong and resilient, having survived a harsh winter. Sprouts shows that same quality of latent, covert power - but now it’s through seedlings that have been hidden away, slowly growing beneath the soil, full of potential and ready to spring forth, abundant with symbolic hope.
