Here at The Hive, we’re not really all about the trends. We embrace our quirkiness - the things that make us unique.

Enjoy this little play on the “Kinda Chic” trend. This is about as close as we’re going to get to trendy. :)

Oh, August. You are one of my favorite months. Birthday celebrations, warm weather, relaxing days, and the return to structure and schedules on the horizon. No wonder some countries choose to virtually shut down operations for most of August!

Things continue to hum along here at The Hive. Most of the work happening now isn’t glamorous or particularly fun. Right now, the work involves calls with City officials, writing large checks to engineering and architectural firms, and meeting with the plumber. It also involves taking stock of what we have and identifying our next right action.

I’ve identified 3 “Next Right Actions”:

1) Pursue a path that will allow events to take place in The Hive House in the more immediate term while the parking lot and barn build-out are completed.

2) Continue pursuing options to fund the remaining work.

3) Find My Center: this is the topic of my latest newsletter. In short, working to find balance. :) Sign up to receive future monthly newsletters for updates, stories, and recommendations!

As summer draws to a close, I hope you find a beautiful rhythm in fall that provides both stability and a beat to which you can dance. Love you all!

I believe celebration is a way to express gratitude, so I am always looking for things to celebrate.

Reaching 500 followers on Instagram seemed like a fun milestone to acknowledge, but I wasn’t sure how I wanted to commemorate this milestone. I gave it some thought and decided this called for a little ‘Helping Hive’ action.

Over the course of two days, I volunteered 500 minutes of my time - one minute for every follower - at two different organizations: Goodman Community Center and Second Harvest Foodbank of Southern WI

It feels so good to be part of a community; something bigger than myself. I am grateful for these organizations, the work they do, and the volunteer opportunities they provide. I’m also grateful for all of you - The Hive Community - for following me on this journey, witnessing me take the leap and bring The Hive to life.

If it has been a minute since you volunteered or did a random act of kindness, I’d invite you to take a moment to think of one thing you could do to help your neighbors, your community. We are better together. ❤️🐝

This incredible table - a true work of art and history has found a home at The Hive. What an honor it is to be trusted with her care.

She’s in good hands, Marlon Hall ❤️ Thank you for blessing The Hive community with this treasure.

Last night was a dream come true.

I had a seat at The Table - the door at the center represents the idea that the table can not only provide a surface for a meal to be shared, but also a portal to deeper conversation, understanding, and community.

I drank in the beautiful sights and sounds at Flynn Creek Farm, learning all about how the owners decided to make the leap and live out their dream to create a regenerative farm in their late 50s/early 60s.

I enjoyed some of the most exquisitely-prepared food I’ve ever had the pleasure of enjoying - all sourced from the farm and prepared by Chef Evan Evan Dannells

I soaked in the powerful, inspirational stories shared by Marlon Hall who guided us through this experience so beautifully

I enjoyed presence and vulnerability with a new friend, Dawn Dawn - Unique Connector - whom I met in an elevator last month at StartingBlock Madison | Coworking Community . There was a reason the universe had our paths cross.

I am grateful to Noah and the team at REAP Food Group for creating this experience and bringing this magic into my life. I will carry this memory and experience with me always.

Last year, I decided to get serious and actually start exploring what it would mean to be an entrepreneur.

There was so much I didn’t know - including what kind of business I wanted to have.

There was also a lot I did know. I knew I was burned out. I knew I was seeking ways to escape reality. I knew my anxiety and blood pressure were at all-time highs. I knew I didn’t feel well - mentally, physically, emotionally, or spiritually. I knew I wanted something different for myself.

Year 37 was really transformative. I spent a lot of time soul-searching; sitting with myself, getting quiet, and paying attention to my body. When did I feel the most calm and at ease? When did my soul fire really light up? What do I value? What do I want for myself, my family, and my community?

I knew that if I was going to pivot away from a corporate career - my “uncomfortable comfort zone” - and knowingly walk into the unknown, then I would need to create a business that would really be a balm to my soul. I needed something that would light me up, play to my strengths, and respect my nervous system. I needed to create a business that would serve me AND my community.

The Hive lives at the intersection of my joy, my strengths, and what my community needs.

I’ve infused my sources of joy into The Hive. Windchimes hang in the window. The lighting is warm and soft. The space caters to small, intimate gatherings.

I’m playing to my strengths. I love being the glue, bringing people together, supporting small businesses and my community.

My community needs more spaces where we can intentionally, and thoughtfully gather. We need a space where we can access the magic of other small businesses, right here in our backyard.

This is why, no matter how hard and scary this journey gets, I remain excited about The Hive. I hope you are, too. ❤️

Sometimes I look around The Hive and feel like nothing is moving. Do you ever feel that way? It seems like things are stagnant, but when you take the time to write it all out, you realize that’s not true at all. Things ARE moving. Progress is being made.

When I set my mind to it, I make it happen. This journey has, however, reinforced the fact that good things take time. No matter how much I want to find investors and open our doors ASAP, some things cannot be forced. Just like you can’t force a seed to grow overnight, The Hive cannot be forced into existence. It must be nurtured. And so it is.

I have made a renewed commitment to continue watering the soil and tending The Hive garden. I know that one day it will be a flourishing, beautiful space for you all to enjoy. For now, I’m enjoying the time spent outdoors in my proverbial Hive garden: watering, humming, pulling weeds, and practicing patience.

If you know of anyone who might be interested in investing in this community space, please send them my way!
