The before, after and in between of creating this emotional piece. I ripped and cut 3 paintings apart that I made as part of healing my trauma. Knowing when they were created I’d be destroying them when I was ready. It took years but I made it! Don’t get me wrong trauma never fully leaves us but through the torture of healing we can turn it into something beautiful. The backdrop is another painting I made a couple years ago and I thought it was perfect for this creation.

I reposted the full story and poem that goes along with it to my page.

Come out and show some love this Friday (April 17th) 6-10!! Would love to see your faces at this

Torturous-describes anything that involves terrible suffering.
Salutary- promoting or intended to promote an improvement or beneficial effect or healing

Torturous Salutary represents a healing process that one endures a great suffering for a beneficial effect. Healing is painful, it’s messy, it’s almost as bad as the trauma itself, one could say it’s Torturous. It makes you look at and feel ALL.THE.THINGS. The end result being a healed soul. Not one where trauma disappears (trust me it rears its ugly head from time to time no matter how much work you’ve put in, but it does get easier with time) but instead it integrates into who we are and as we heal it blooms into something beautiful never leaving us but instead changing and evolving.

If you’d like to hear the full story & the powerful poem by that goes with this painting the live video is reposted on my page, we are at about the 30 min mark.

I strongly encourage you to listen to all the presenters. It’s an incredible show I’m truly humbled.

Thank you for the opportunity to participate. This truly my favorite.

So excited!!

So excited!!

Our annual writers and artists collaboration opens tomorrow!

South Gallery: Ecstatic Ekphrasis: presented by the Firehouse Writers and Artists

The Firehouse Art Center is home to both practicing visual artists and writers. Annually for April, which is Month of Poetry, these writers and artists collaborate to present an ekphrasis based exhibit. Ekphrasis is a Greek word meaning “a literary device that describes a work of art.”. Ekphrasis in ancient Greece was the skill of describing a thing with vivid detail. Today, the term refers to writing in response to an artwork. The annual writers/artists exhibit expands on the definition of ekphrasis by having artists make artworks based on the works of authors as well as authors reacting to visual art.

Much like the game “Telephone”, subtle shifts in meaning may be accomplished by translating an author’s work into another language, giving both works multiple layers.

The exhibition will be on view in the South Gallery from April 3- April 19.
