By reducing the world around us to planes of color, light, and shape, the familiar becomes unfamiliar. Political identities disappear. Social categories dissolve. What’s left is energy, and the extraordinary beauty of ordinary life.“

A new Artsy Viewing Room featuring recent work by Austen Brantley is now live.

In this new body of work, Brantley continues his exploration of the figure while beginning to open the body, revealing armatures, interior spaces and spaces that would remain hidden.

It’s an interesting evolution in his practice, expanding the figure beyond portraiture and considering what the body can hold.

Explore the full viewing room on Artsy. Link in bio.

For Josue Bessiake, moving between places became a way of searching for the things that connect one environment to another.

“In The lights are on, but no one’s home”, those through lines emerge through domestic space, light, architecture and the familiar forms we encounter every day.

This Saturday, join Josue in conversation with Kendale Jones as they discuss the ideas, materials and experiences that have shaped this new body of work.

Materiality is central to Josue Bessiake’s new exhibition, The Lights Are On, but No One’s Home.

Using handmade pigments, layered paint, and techniques rooted in fresco, Bessiake builds surfaces exploring the recurring form of the window.

Hear more from Josue during his conversation with Kendale Jones on October 3rd 4-6 PM | 205 E. 9 Mile.
