stoked to get this Ampex 351, early 60’s vintage… purchased from the estate of Dr. Ed Wolfrum, who passed in 2021.
Ed was hired as a tech by Motown Studios in 1965 when he was 18 (!!!) and is widely credited as the inventor of the DI box (“Wolfbox”), the design of which quickly became standard gear in every studio on earth. By all accounts, a super talented and generous dude… who also went on to work at United Sound and engineered amazing records for Funkadelic, Isaac Hayes, Marvin Gaye among many others.
ANYWAY the 351’s were originally sold as big mono (or stereo) reel-to-reel decks, and this is the tube preamp section. They’re well-loved as beefy mic pre’s by many, not the least of whom was Steve Albini; his Electrical Audio studio still contains at least a half dozen that are in daily use.
It’s not unreasonable to think that this 351 was used at Motown or United, as they had many such units over the years (see pix). This one gonna need a full overhaul and some mods to make it into a useful piece of gear as most of the components are 60+ years old. Will (hopefully) document that process soon 🫠⚡️👀🙏
