EGO BLAST: What about a get-together this Summer?

Hi everybody!

Thanks for supporting our EGO community guitar orchestra. I've attached some photos from our show last weekend.

This post is aimed at the maybe 60-70 guitarists who have participated in EGO, even in a small way, over the last two years.

Recently, Steve suggested that we hold a rehearsal in a public park sometime this Summer, for the purpose of attracting more players. What a great idea!

Then, I thought it would be cool to invite all of our old players to come out for one event, like a class reunion. My original vision for EGO was actually to bring together 60-70 guitarists in a park, so maybe this is the time.

*** Would YOU be interested in participating in a big EGO "reunion" event like this? Please get back to me. Late September, let me know if Sat or Sun is better for you.

BIG BIG CHEERS for the 15 or so super-dedicated EGOtists who have kept the flame alive all this time!!! This core group is really sounding excellent, and our shows this Summer have been pretty darn wonderful.

Thanks, hoping to see all our old pals in September! And lots of new ones too.

EGO BLAST: Thanks for yet another spectacular show last night!

Hello, and thanks for supporting your favorite community orchestra.

EGO has performed four times this summer, and three of the shows have been spectacular successes, with lots of love, attention and support from big, growing audiences

Last night, we were honored to be a part of the ongoing Gazebo Music Series, hosted by our pals Al and Shannon. About 40 people attended, and they were with us from the first note to the last.

AND i spoke with a good 6-8 people who are interested in joining EGO in the future. New players, new pals all the time.

Why not?!? It's so much fun. And when we're on, we're just about the best band in Detroit. Well, we have some unfair advantages -- playing the best music written over the last 400 years, on a dozen of the coolest instruments ever invented. It's a hell of a sound. I mean that sincerely.

i've played in bands for most of 50 years, and this is the best yet, at least when we are on.

Hoping to see YOU at our next rehearsal -- even if you are a complete beginner!

EGO Blast: Big Show on Aug 16!

ELECTRIC GUITAR ORCHESTRA
Sat Aug 16 6:30: Gazebo Music Series

Thanks for supporting your favorite community orchestra!

We've already had two spectacular shows this Summer, at Palmer Park and the LiverNOISE event in May. We started playing, at both, to just two or three people in the audience, and by the time we finished there were several dozen watching, listening and cheering us on. Wonderful!

We'll be performing several new pieces on Aug. 16, including Satie, Paganini, and also a tragically under-appreciated composer by the name of Loveless. :-) One of our top players, Dave Harms, will perform the Paganini Caprice solo. It's pretty amazing.

We're having such a blast with EGO, and the only thing missing is YOU. We have loaner guitars and amps, and we don't care if you are a total beginner. Everyone has a right to play a little music, and everyone should because it's good for you. So we hope to see you at our next rehearsal!

===========================================

*** SAT AUG 16: GAZEBO MUSIC SERIES

Our dear friends, Shannon and Al, host touring musicians in their backyard all summer long, including some incredibly talented musicians. We're awfully lucky to be part of their Summer series. Shannon's son will also perform at this show.

Thay raise serious money for seriously professional touring musicians. Which ain't us! There was a lot of debate about the ticket price on the flier. Shan tries hard to raise money for her acts. But we don't care. We're not playing for money. Just know that one will be turned away for lack of funds. In fact, it's a good time to shake me down in case i owe YOU money!

Thanks, steffie

Hey Gang! It's about 1:00 am, and looking like a RAINOUT for later today (Sunday May 4). Weather.com has showers starting in Ferndale at 10am, rain starting at noon and continuing all day. We'd probably be dry inside the tent, but you'd get a good soaking to and from your cars, bringing up the amps,. etc.

So REHEARSAL IS CANCELLED.
We'll try again on Tues May 13.

* No word back yet from the Hazel PERK Cafe. I've left three messages.

* Here's the main two themes of Ravel! We're going to need NINE people who can play this, to fully flesh out the arrangement. All ninewill eventually play this theme, as the piece swells into a crescendo. We'll also have two more versions, an octave and two octaves higher. AND there are some lavish and rich harmonies towards the end. And the wild ending, of course. All that has to be fully orchestrated into the nine parts. And there are some rather easy supportive parts too.

So, this is probably 15% of the project. i'd love it if you will start learning these parts while i finish the rest. i think maybe we will simplify some of the unusual timing. This is a little tricky! It's much much easier if you think of the 8th note getting one beat, rather than the 1/4.

One of the most notorious parts of Bolero is the repetition that sounds like a pipe organ, about halfway through. That's accomplished by playing this exact melody, only way up on the fretboard and in the keys of G and E respectively. The original melody is in C! So, it's in three different keys all shoved together. The G and E keys must be low in volume and high in pitch, because what you are doing is in fact emphasizing the third and fifth overtones. These parts should be just loud enough to "sweeten" the melody in C. I'm a little worried about how it will sound! But it's probably a historical sacrilege if we don't do it.

Interested in overtones? Here's a very cool video, directly pertinent. Science and math and music! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ius9LP86BlY

This one page of music took me waaaaaaay too long, and totally because of my failing eyesight. But i "see" (pun intended) a doctor this week for a referral for cataract surgery, which WILL finally happen this summer.

Love you guys! See you a week from Tues.

Hey Gang!

So, our first performance invite for 2025. Mike Kelly just contacted me. He runs the Tangent Gallery in Hamtramck. We had a wonderful, casual show there last summer, our second ever. Mike plays bass and promises we will see him at an EGO rehearsal some time.

This is at the Annex, in Highland Park, another gallery. Art galleries seem to be a great venue for us.

It sounds like they are open to having us multiple dates. We need lots of rehearsal! i'm thinking Fri Feb 28 and Sat March 1 might be good, allowing more people to participate if they can only make either Fri or Sat.

Let's have some discussion about this gig on this email list. And will you please respond to me privately about your availability for the four dates? [email protected].

Thanks, see you Tuesday!
