We have received word from family of the death this past Tuesday of Wes Simpson who passed away at 82 from a massive heart attack. Wes came to the Eel River Valley in the early 1970’s where he met and married Eileen Regli, the youngest daughter of A.J. (Tony) and Elizabeth Regli who dairied on Witman Lane east of Ferndale. Wes and Eileen resided in the area the next 42 years until her death in 2014 when he returned to his native Madera.

Wes was a professional dairy cattle fitter; the guy who takes a cow in her working clothes and washes, clips her hair and primps her for the competition of the show ring. Wes traveled across the country, for many years by rail, with some of California’s top herds and became one of the best at his craft. His stories from those years on “the circuit” could fill volumes.

He came to Humboldt County when he worked for John Giacomini’s Clover Blossom Jersey show string. After his marriage to Eileen he wanted to travel less so focused more on operating a clipping service for commercial dairies in California and Oregon.

Wes was a big sports fan, and owned a sports card shop in Fortuna for several years. He enjoyed following his and Eileen’s many nieces and nephews and their high school teams, and had a life-long loyalty to the Fresno State Bulldogs. His relocation to Madera allowed him to satisfy that passion as he regularly attended Bulldog games in several sports, especially women’s basketball. He had an encyclopedic memory for anything from sports stats to dairy breed pedigrees and production records. There are over a dozen fantasy football leagues who lost a player mid-season when he unexpectedly passed away this week (trust me, it would take an incredible mind to keep that process organized).

Wes Simpson was unique, colorful, and enriched our community in his time here. Our condolences to his surviving siblings and their families, and to his extended Regli relatives.
