Hayti has always been a home. A place where Durham's artists gather, create, and belong.

We're building something that makes that permanent (more on that soon!!), but in the meantime… we're opening our doors — and keeping them open — from Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. We'll also be open an hour before performances and events.

We can't wait to welcome you during these extended hours as you meet, work, create, and discover!

Happy National Gardening Day.

Started off this morning working on my 2026 Gardening Journal. This will be my 13th one. Every year I get a little better at journaling.

And today I was numbering my garden beds.
Yes, you read that right. 29 beds.
Yes, I have an agricultural arithmetic problem.

But honestly I would not have it any other way.

Here are 5 things 13 years of growing food and journalling has taught me:

1️⃣ Soil is everything
If you get the soil right, the plants will do most of the work. Feed the soil, not just the plant.
2️⃣ Consistency beats intensity
Watering, feeding, and checking daily matters more than doing something big once in a while.
3️⃣ Problems always show up early
If you walk your garden every day, it will tell you what it needs before it becomes a problem.
4️⃣ Simple systems save time
Drip irrigation, mulching, and good layout planning will give you back hours every week.
5️⃣ You will never stop learning
Every season teaches something new. The moment you think you have it figured out is when the garden humbles you.

Time saved is time earned and a good journal helps you earn a whole lot more of it.

How many beds are you running this year and do you keep track of them all?
