Why Did We Let Her Go?
This exploration of social issues in African American community began as I noticed the overwhelming majority of people of color employed as the “nannies” of Caucasian children in New York. As I thought of the economic and social causes of this sad contemporary condition, a reflection of recent time when slaves stolen from Africa were put to work doing the same thing as “mammies,” I also saw a parallel with the fact that Africa, once the cradle of all civilization and the birthplace of all knowledge and education, is now treated as if it is a third-class civilization in the world economy. When I think back to the libraries of Timbuktu I can’t help but to wonder out loud of the European hordes of earlier centuries “She once held your hand, why did you let her go?”
