Dahlia’s are so perfect and symmetrical—little wonders. It’s so hard to capture them, not much does them justice. But it’s fun to try!

Tulips! They arrive every year just when I need them most. I have some sprinkled randomly in the landscaping, and a bunch of them on one end of a raised bed. (I never know what to do with that section after they bloom, currently it has a nice cover crop of w**ds.)

The dahlias are finally blooming! Such late summer queens, these beauties. I love all the rich colors, but sweet little white dahlias may be my favorite.

Years ago, (like 20 years ago) I read a book about tourists visiting the Mayan ruins, only to be attacked by killer jungle vines. It was terrifying. This scenario reminds me of my current garden: I have one giant cucumber with vines that grab your ankles as you walk past, along with an impressive number of w**ds. Oh, and the heat. It’s a lot more fun to garden in May, a little more difficult to keep the same enthusiasm going in the dog days of summer.

I did manage to get out and reclaim one raised bed from the w**d takeover the other night, and it felt so satisfying to find my peppers and herbs again. Next up is the sunflower bed, but lucky for them they’re taller than most the w**ds, and can beat them on the race to the sun.

Just wishing you some late July garden encouragement today: may your sunflowers be tall and your w**ds be few. (This little sunflower painting is part of a small series of bouquet paintings inspired by my unruly garden. Available Labor Day, September 7th!)

“Ditch lillies” three ways: contour line sketch, watercolor sketch, left handed (non dominant) sketch.

There’s a break between peony season and summer flowers in the garden, anxiously waiting to fill up jars again!

Someone asked me a couple weeks ago if I was working on anything big art wise. My answer was no, but that I was working on lots of little tiny things.✨

I just wrapped up another semester of my masters degree, so I guess that’s the big thing. These little squares of color are just providing a tiny bit of art (apart from school) and regulation along the way.
