Chris Cook Fine Art

Chris Cook Fine Art Art vendor. Chris Cook's studio and gallery are located at ARTIFACTS GALLERY in Farmington, New Mexico. BIOGRAPHY

Chris was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1961.

Paintings are also sold at RAVEN HOUSE GALLERY in Mancos, Colorado. At the age of nine he and his family moved to the little town of Bluff, Utah. The change from a large metropolitan area to a rural setting was huge, but for the young artist the fit could not have been better. While living in Bluff Chris developed a deep love for the outdoors and spent a good deal of time exploring the red rock

canyons and cottonwood-lined creeks in the Four Corners area. From an early age Chris has expressed himself through art. Primarily self-taught, he has been influenced by the work of other artists, such as: George Inness, Maxfield Parrish, and Richard McKinley. As a young man Chris set aside his art while he completed two tours of service with the United States Marines. Later, while earning a degree in Business Administration at Utah State University, Chris began to draw again. Working primarily with graphite or colored pencil, he received a number of commissions for portraiture and landscape art. In 2000 a friend gave Chris a used set of pastels and suggested he try them. It was one of the best gifts he’d ever received. Chris immediately fell in love with the medium. Since that time he has worked exclusively with pastel. Always curious as to what’s over the next hill, or around the next bend, Chris tries to convey that sense curiosity and wonder for nature through his paintings. Today Chris lives in Farmington, New Mexico and continues to find inspiration for his art while traveling and hiking throughout the west.

Fun fact about this painting: The scene could be any number of places in the Western U.S. While I was working on this piece over the weekend, a gentleman visiting the studio looked at it and asked, “Is that the little stream near FairPlay, Colorado?” (A town about 250 miles away) He was 100% correct. But he was puzzled by the high peak in the background, saying that he didn’t remember a peak that tall being there. There isn’t. I added it. The painting is 12”x18” and is on display at Artifacts Gallery/ Artifacts 302

Today is nice and snowy, but just a short time ago the cottonwoods were still clinging to their golden leaves. I just finished this late afternoon scene from along the San Juan River. We are so fortunate to live in such a beautiful part of the country. This painting is 27” x 24” and is on display at Artifacts Gallery/ Artifacts 302.

I just completed this quick, little (9”x12”) color study for a larger version of this scene of the San Juan River east of Blanco. The overlook is one of my favorite places, especially in the Fall.

“The winds will blow their freshness into you and storms their energy, while cares will drop off like Autumn leaves.” I just finished this painting from a hike Tara and I took in the LaPlata Mountains. We were making our way to the top of Silver Mountain. The painting is 20” x 16” and is on display at Artifacts Gallery/ Artifacts 302. By the way, the quote at the beginning of this post is by John Muir, as he talked about trekking in the mountains.

Hello. I hope everybody is well. It has been awhile since I’ve posted anything. Even though I’ve been quiet I have been busy with art—teaching and working on several sketches for future paintings (which will be coming shortly). Anyway, here is a still life that I finished just this morning.
