Hello friends of Heaven 88.7,

We have been running on a temporary, 800-watt Antenna for one month now. In the meantime, we were getting quotes from various companies for a new antenna. After negotiating a good price, we purchased a Shively antenna. Before we could buy it though, we needed to have an engineer approve it, so that we know that the weight it puts on the tower, including in windy conditions or when covered in ice, is acceptable. In the end, this was all successful.

The antenna took some time to manufacture, and now has been shipped and will likely arrive sometime in the next week. Then we’ll need to have the tower climbers climb the tower, lower the old antenna, winch up the new antenna piece by piece, and install it. All of this is quite an ordeal, which is why the labor costs will probably run more than the antenna itself. We also need to have good conditions. If we happen to get freezing rain anytime soon this could throw the plans off. So pray for good weather.

We are still in need of more financial support to cover these costs. We purchased the antenna in faith that our listeners are alongside us to help us with this expense. Heaven 88.7 is back on air for the Fargo-Moorhead area! Our defective antenna is still mounted to the radio tower, but we were able to get a small temporary antenna installed. We are broadcasting with our main transmitter turned down to 800 watts, which is what this antenna can sustain.

Now we are looking towards the purchase of a new 100,000 watt antenna. We are getting quotes and are anticipating a cost of $60,000+.

The antenna will most likely not be installed until some time in October. Due to this, we are suspending our Fall-Share-a-thon until we are able to get back at full power so that people can hear us. But we still do need to raise funds in the meantime!

Last week we had professionals climb the tower, inspect the antenna, and test our feed line. Reports are in, and we have a few things in need of repair. The line is still working (praise the Lord!) However, we need a new compressor-dehydrator to keep the line pressurized, but the biggest expense is that the antenna is damaged beyond repair.

This is the same antennae that we have used since we went on air in 1997, and in fact 27 years is a good life for an antenna like that. It will take a little time to get the antennae manufactured (it is custom built for our frequency) and to remove the old one, and get the new one shipped and mounted.

Here’s our plans:

Currently, we are operating with the damaged antenna. Because it is damaged, a good deal of the power that is sent to it reflects back down the line, which can damage the transmitter. We are using a backup transmitter, and so we are operating right now at around 60 watts (quite a reduction from our normal 100,000 watts!)

Next week, we plan to have a 800 watt antenna mounted. This is a smaller, easier job to hold us over. At that point we will go to 800 watts. Then in the course of many weeks to a couple months we will do the rest of the work to get the new antennae and to have the old one removed, after which we will be back at full power.

We do not currently have money in the bank to make these repairs. Minimally, all of this will cost us $75,000, but likely it will be more. If the Lord leads, please consider sending a special gift for this time. We do not know if we will back at full power come our fall share-a-thon, but certainly we will be mentioning this major expense at that time as well.
