Aurora Camerata Early music, modern spirit. St Mary Schola founded by The Reverend James Dalton-Thompson and Bruce Fithian.

The goal is to provide the finest in early music literature to New England audiences and to promote professional vocal ensemble singing at the highest level.

American Voices comes to life TODAY, Saturday at 4:00 PM at St. Mary’s in Falmouth.

For one final preview, here is our entire company performing Come On, You Little Lovely Band.

This remarkable Shaker song survives in a manuscript collection associated with Sister Martha Thurlow of the Sabbathday Lake Shaker community here in Maine.
It was rediscovered for this program by our collaborator Chris Moore, a specialist in Shaker music, who has helped us explore a repertoire in which music was inseparable from worship, community, and daily life.

So far as we know, Come On, You Little Lovely Band has never before been performed publicly. Tomorrow, Aurora Camerata will bring it from the manuscript page to the concert stage for what will be its first public performance — sung by the full company with fiddle and mandolin.

Before it became The Star-Spangled Banner, this tune belonged to a London singing club. It was written to show off the athletic singing abilities of its members - hence its extraordinary wide vocal range!

John Stafford Smith’s Anacreontic Song crossed the Atlantic, acquired new words, and eventually became the melody of the American national anthem — a perfect example of musical ideas travelling, changing, and taking on new identities.

American Voices: Liberty, Faith, and Folk Memory traces some of the music that helped shape the American experience — from its English roots and the songs of the Revolutionary era to the extraordinary music of William Billings, shape-note hymnody, Shaker traditions, spirituals, fiddle music, and folk song.

The program brings together the region’s finest professional singerswith guest musicians Chris Moore, guitars, and Callie Brennan, fiddle, alongside organ and historical readings. Highlights include John Stafford Smith’s Anacreontic Song — whose melody would later become The Star-Spangled Banner — Revolutionary songs and dances, “Yankee Doodle,” music by the remarkable early American composer William Billings, the shape-note hymn Wondrous Love, the spiritual Steal Away, and a group of historic Shaker songs including Mother Ann’s Song, Solemn Song, and Father James’ Song.
