OUR 1ST REVIEW! Mama Cass Elliot Musical is a Must See at Footlights Theatre! A Review by Christina Koomen. A tour de force performance in a mega-hit production, The Mama Cass Elliot Musical: The Best Part of My Life, is now playing at the Footlights Theatre (Falmouth, ME) through May 23.
What made this revival especially remarkable is that I almost never revisit a show I’ve already reviewed. But after being blown away by this musical during its 2024 premiere, I returned to see it again and it did not disappoint. In fact, it was even bigger, bolder, and more emotionally powerful the second time around.
Conceived and directed by Footlights Theatre Executive Artistic Director Michael J. Tobin, this riveting 80-minute multimedia musical celebrates the life and legacy of Cass Elliot, the iconic Grammy-winning singer best known for her work with The Mamas & The Papas. This updated production features even more musical hits and a richer emotional journey than the original.
Returning to the role after a courageous two-year battle with cancer, Eliza Ruth Watson delivers a performance that is nothing short of extraordinary. I said it before, and I’ll say it again: her portrayal of Cass Elliot is astonishing. Performing 15 musical numbers, Watson commands the stage with a Broadway-caliber voice, effortless range, and emotional honesty that makes every lyric resonate. For 80 minutes, she doesn’t simply portray Cass Elliot, she becomes her.
Tobin’s creative direction combines music, storytelling, archival interviews, photos, and video to paint a fascinating portrait of Elliot beyond the myths and stereotypes. The result is a heartfelt, energetic, and deeply moving theatrical experience that proves there was so much more to this legendary artist than just her unforgettable voice.
What makes Watson’s performance so uncanny is not simply her vocal similarity or physical resemblance to Elliot, it’s her spirit. During moments when archival images and footage of the real Cass Elliot appeared behind her, the illusion became almost surreal. At times, it genuinely felt as though Cass herself had stepped back onto the stage.
Tobin’s colorful 1960s-inspired set design adds yet another layer of authenticity and energy, with the cleverly constructed pseudo-stage unit proving especially effective throughout the evening.
Reserve your tickets now because this will be a sellout. The cost is a very affordable $25 ticket price. There’s plenty of free parking right outside the theater.
