Dutch researcher and writer Carla Kager recently published a richly-illustrated 328-page book titled "Homesickness for Emond - Gari Melchers, George Hitchcock and the Egmond School: Painters from Past Times."

Egmond became a beloved spot for artists at the end of the nineteenth century owing to its rural coastal atmosphere, red roofs, tulip fields, and traditional costumes.

According to the author, who works for the Museum of Egmond, Melchers developed a strong bond with the locals. “He painted many portraits and had intensive contact with the inhabitants. As a result, we often know more about him and his models than about other artists."

According to Sarah Isgur, author of "Last Branch Standing," Justice Amy Coney Barrett's favorite flower is the tulip. It seems especially fitting, then, that she selected Gari Melchers' "Arranging the Tulips," on loan from the Smithsonian American Art Museum, to adorn the wall of her chambers. 🌷
