Always fun to post the new artwork - from my longtime collaborator & graphic designer extraordinaire, Andy Saffron! Always makes it seem that much more real! Coming soon, folks - we're exactly a month away from our first show! (But get us to a well-deserved Spring Break first - we'll ramp up and open ticket sales after that!)
Sneak peek! Threw together the opening number from Frog/Toad for the Rising 9th Grade Arts Show today - hats off to Barb Cressman for getting the Bird Girls costumes done in time! A month out, it’s starting to shine!
Set shop going full tilt for our spring musical “A Year With Frog & Toad” - crammed right now making sets, props & puppets! CAN’T WAIT to finally take over the stage on Friday afternoon - so we can unload into there and have the shop back to build more again!
So this is a little bit late in posting: in the fall, my IB Theatre class participated in The Shakespeare Theatre's Text Alive program - in which we studied Shakespeare's problem play "The Merchant of Venice" and were assigned a scene to perform (along with 10 other schools who were assigned different scenes). Normally, they do the presentation of all the schools' scenes in order of the play on one day in December; but thanks to COVID, we had to shoot it on film. However, that turned out to be a great opportunity. Shot by Ben Campagnuolo (who wants to go to film school) and directed by collaborators Joseph Long & Kaden Hughes, the scene turned out really well! Students had to pick an era and design it, and the class chose Mafia Italy of the 70s, and placed the trial scene in a Mafia Don's private estate (mob justice happening behind closed doors). It took weeks for an outside editor to put it together, and after we watched it in class in Feb, I got swept up with other projects and forgot to post. (But here it is - please note, this is a problematic play that may trigger some folks, with Shylock, a Jew, being treated in a very unsympathetic manner - it WAS written 400 years ago). The ex*****on of the scene, from the acting to the camera work though is really top-notch. And it was a fantastic experience for the class (dovetailing with all of the work we were doing in the IB class).

I cannot rave about this new musical comedy world premiere “A.D. 16” currently playing at Olney Theatre in MD enough. Saw it last weekend with some theatre teacher pals and we had a BALL! Yes, Olney is a HIKE from DC/VA (and all other points) - but they are streaming it next week! Watch it in the comfort of your living room!
Here’s the pitch: girl meets boy, girl falls for boy, boy is Teen Jesus, girl Teen Mary Magdelene. And it rocks to a 90s hip-hop R&B score! SO FUNNY and entertaining! If you can’t make the trek out, consider streaming and watching from home. It WILL have a future life, and live theatre is always better - but I’m glad this option is out there!
PUPPETS! There will be puppets in A Year With Frog &’Toad! Check out our incredibly talented Rainn Afif’s prototype for The Large & Terrible Frog puppet - which may or may not look like this (blown up like times 50!) Creativity is a-happening among our tech crews!
And we are LAUNCHED! Frog & Toad rehearsals are off and running! Students learning choreo last week, learning music the week before! Opening night will be here before we know it!

Statesmen Theatre thanks and salutes Brian Heath (father of junior tech, Brandyn) for taking fabulous pictures of both the One-act Festival and the VHSL play on pretty much a moment's notice. It is with a heavy heart that I must report Marshall tied for 1st place for the VHSL Regional Round - yet ultimately came in 2nd in quality points; and so Chantilly will advance to the State Finals. (Quality points are used for tiebreakers in rankings; judges award each school 300 possible points based on acting, direction & ensemble effect. Chantilly scored 277, Marshall scored 273. So we got beat by 4 measly points. This was the same scenario last year – we tied for 1st but lost by 8 quality points with the online VHSL version.) It’s frustrating for sure, but hats off to Luke Batarseh, who once again deservedly won Best Actor! So we get a runner-up trophy and Luke pulls down Best Actor twice in a row! Congrats on a great run, everyone. I was really proud of all your work on this, and how many audiences got to see this amazing play and terrific performance! But now we can put our Bible Quiz Team Captain to bed and move on to Frog & Toad! Good night, all.
Captain of the Bible Quiz Team is competing at VHSL Regionals TOMORROW (February 10) at Marshall HS! The competition starts at 5:30 with Madison. Marshall appears at 7:45! Calling all participants or student audience members of this year’s one-act festival! On Monday February 14, there will be a meeting held after school to talk about what went well and what could use improvements about the festival. Everyone will receive one ITS meeting point for attending. We will also be taking the ITS yearbook picture at the same time. We hope to see you there!
That’s a wrap! Yesterday was the closing night of Actin’ Out — a festival of student written and directed one acts. This was such a wonderful experience, giving so many opportunities to so many students as techs, actors, playwrights, and directors. Thank you all so much for being apart of it! Thank you to so many talented new cast & crew members who gained valuable stage time with so many opportunities! So…new tradition, yes? Who wants to see a new play festival every year??

Actin’ Out’s opening night is TOMORROW February 3rd at 7:30 PM! Each one-act ranges 10-15 minutes. Once the student-written one-acts are over, there will be an intermission and then a performance of Captain of the Bible Quiz Team! Ticket link is in our bio. We hope to see you there!
Introducing our fifth, and final, one-act for Actin' Out: "Saved" written and directed by Ryely Rogers.
Suede is in denial of her psychological disorder. She struggles with flashbacks and hallucinations. Will Suede be able to overpower her mind... or will her mind overpower her?
Ryely Rogers (senior) has been a part of Statesmen Theatre for 4 years. Saved is an adaptation of a play she wrote during her sophomore year in Theatre 2 and she would never have imagined that it would be brought to life. Ryely is so excited to be directing her first play and can't wait for everyone to see it. She is so proud of her cast, crew, and everyone who has worked to put this production together and she cannot thank them enough. She would like to thank Mr. DeLeo, her friends, and family for always believing in her!

Finding your role in highschool can be a very intimidating experience. You have the jocks, the nerds, the musicians, the theatre kids, and so many other groups. You're constantly under the eyes of others. At least, you think you are. Will Andrew be able to persevere and stand confident in his identity?
After spending 3 years on the acting side of Statesmen Theatre. Benjamin Campagnuolo is very excited to be writing and directing theatre for the first time! If you told Benjamin a year ago, after he wrote this play in his theatre 2 class, that he would be able to see his play onstage. He probably wouldn’t believe you. Benjamin is very thankful for his amazing cast and crew for working with a first time director. He also thanks Mr. DeLeo for giving him the chance to bring his idea to life.

That means ANYONE can come to see Actin' Out - the 1st Annual Winter Festival of Original Student Plays, this Thursday, Friday & Saturday nights, Feb 3-5 @ 7:30 PM. It's 5 brand new plays written & directed by our talented Juniors & Seniors! Followed by encore performances of our VHSL District-winning play, "Captain of the Bible Quiz Team!"

Statesmen Theatre thanks Phil Charlwood, Pastor Tony & Emmanuel Lutheran Church of Vienna for being our resource on our VHSL-winning one-act “Captain of the Bible Quiz Team” - today Luke Batarseh, playing the title character, got to rehearse the piece on their actual altar and it made SUCH a positive difference. Introducing our third one-act for Actin' Out: "TheraDate" written and directed by Rainn Afif.
You may be aware of the... long and tedious... journey of finding the therapist that works for you. TheraDate explores finding a therapist in a more convenient way: dating. Follow along the journies of four clients to finding their perfect match through a blind session, pen pal, and Thrindr (a therapist and client matching app).
Rainn Afif (junior) has participated in numerous shows at Marshall as both a techie and performer. Rainn has attended two pre-college programs in Creative Writing, one at Columbia University and the other at Emerson College. Through these programs, their ideas have further developed into words on a page, and soon expanded to the stage. They’re thrilled to be able to share their work with everyone! Rainn is incredibly grateful for the support from their friends and family, and for encouraging them to try different sides of theatre, such as playwriting.

Introducing our second one-act for Actin' Out: "Lagging Out" written and directed by Nina Southern.
Lagging Out explores the world of an 18-year-old boy, someone who's reality is slowly becoming more morphed into his video game: Zafar's Space Adventures. His anxiety and hallucinations began to overrule his mind... but how far will it go?
Nina Southern (senior) is grateful to have had the experience directing a piece she wrote her sophomore year. She loves acting, and she especially enjoyed portraying Helena in A Midsummer Night’s Dream during the fall. Nina has equally loved seeing her work come to life on stage and can not wait for you to see all the hard work students have put into this one-act festival. She would like to thank her friends, family, and Mr. DeLeo for all their support. Nina would also like to congratulate her actors, stage manager, Jaya, and producer, Abby, for their hard work.

We're all aware of how pressuring secret gift-exchanges are. Well, watch the pressure completely detiriate the sanity of coworkers at a holiday office party.
AJ Hernandez-Sortore is absolutely terrified and excited to share this show with you. This is their 7th show at Marshall, but the first they wrote. With plans to major in Comedy Writing at their dream school, Columbia College of Chicago, they hope you enjoy The Mug and all the hard work the actors and techs put into it. They’re forever grateful for all the hard work to bring the show to life 🙂
