On the afternoon of September 12, 2026,12:00-3:00PM, DCR/Fall River Heritage Park will be transformed. Families arriving at the visitor center will be surprised by what they see inside. The familiar space will become something entirely new, an indoor butterfly arboretum, alive with color, and activity.
At the center of the room will be an indoor garden designed in warm colors and vibrant greenery, highlighting a pollination Lego exhibit.
Each corner of the room will offer a variety of activities to spark the imagination. Families will gather around for a bilingual reading of the book Señorita Mariposa by Ben Gundersheimer and a special sung performance of the Ode to Senorita Mariposa.
Craft stations will be set up with activities. The scent of s’mores and treat stations will draw families together for sweet breaks between adventures.
Outside, StoryWalk® along the boardwalk & pollination gardens invite families to read page by page of the book Señorita Mariposa through the monarch’s journey and learn all about the importance of our butterfly friends with the Trustees. Org.
There will be a special appearance of “Miss Butterfly” along with photo opportunities.
As the afternoon winds down, everyone will gather for the moment they had been waiting for, the eco friendly paper butterfly release (limited number of butterflies). Children will hold their butterflies gently, and on the count of three, paper wings will lift into the air.
The spirit of Señorita Mariposa Day, community, imagination, and the magic of nature, will turn a simple Saturday into a memory families will carry long after the butterflies drift away.
It’s a fun and educational day suitable for the entire family and it’s free. Enjoy crafts, music, and activities themed around these important pollinators in our ecosystem. Presented by the Creative Arts Network Inc, The Waterfront Cultural District, DCR/Fall River Heritage State Park in cooperation with the Massachusetts Cultural Council.
