Boston, MA - The Commonwealth Brass Quintet performs the annual rededication ceremony at the Massachusetts Fallen Heroes Memorial.

"This is more than a memorial. It's a place where we come together to remember, to reflect and to reaffirm our commitment to those who gave everything for our nation," said Maj. Gen. Gary W. Keefe, adjutant general of the Massachusetts National Guard.

Thousands of flags surround the memorial in the Seaport. Each one represents a service member killed in action or lost while serving since 9/11.

After an exceptional 27-year career with the Massachusetts Army National Guard (MAARNG), we congratulate Sgt. 1st Class Nelson Cabral on his retirement and future of leading tomorrow's military leaders as the Army Instructor for JROTC at Wareham High School.

Sgt. 1st Class Cabral began as a traditional guardsman with the 215th Army Band before going on active duty as a MAARNG recruiter. Following eight years of recruiting operations, he moved on to Readiness Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO) at the Recruit Sustainment Program (RSP). Sgt. 1st Class Cabral returned to the 215th in 2014 as Supply Sergeant and assumed Readiness NCO in 2021 until 2026, when he retired with 21 years of selfless active duty service to the commonwealth.

Beyond his extensive Army career, most of us know him for his charismatic and commanding saxophone personality that he brings to every concert, regardless of venue, audience or occasion. The 215th will miss him dearly, and our audience will even more so! Congratulations on your retirement, and we wish you the best on your journey leading our Nation's future officers.
