She Was Only 18 When She Made History.
In 1864, seventeen-year-old Vinnie Ream walked into the White House and asked Abraham Lincoln if she could sculpt him. He agreed.
With no formal art training, she modeled Lincoln in clay for five months. After his assassination in 1865, her work became a lasting artistic record of the president.
At just 18, she won a controversial commission to create a marble statue of Lincoln for the U.S. Capitol. Despite fierce criticism, she completed it in 1870. The statue was unveiled in 1871 and still stands in the Capitol Rotunda.
They questioned her age, talent, and ability.
She answered with her art. The skeptics faded. Her work endured.
