The first picture is one of the reality of working with clay. It’s a fragile medium, the most fragile before the first firing when it’s bone dry. Just about had this bowl finished and in shifting it I put just a bit too much pressure on the rim. The rest of the photos are the progression of a 5 # lump of clay to a good sized bowl. I’ve been working at throwing larger, it takes some strength and knowing how to use your body to compensate for lack of brawn. I’ve persisted and conquered. Just don’t ask me to throw a 6 # bowl yet!

Some of my favorite pieces out of the kiln load I glazed this week. I’ve been experimenting quite a bit with glazes and building techniques. Enjoying the process.

Tiny hand built dishes, glazed. Key for size reference. Always fun to make and they fill in the unused corners of glaze shelves, especially when I’m making tile.

Trying something new while waiting for glaze to dry between coats on my next batch of tile. It’s rubber block printing. Since I enjoy carving clay so much I thought I’d revisit block printing with some of the same designs I’m playing with when carving in clay (sgraffito). When I was in college I experimented a bit with block printing and enjoyed the process, and found I still do all these years later. Definitely will explore this more.

Opened a glaze kiln load full of tile yesterday. I had room for this bowl and a few other pieces on the top shelf. Quite pleased with how this turned out. It’s taken awhile but I feel like I’m finally landing on my own style.

Loaded up the kin with tile and some other pieces to be bisque fired. Trying my hand at goblets to go with small plates to make a requested communion set. Excited to do it since it’s for and ‘s wedding in 3 weeks.

Rocky started putting the tile I’ve been making for the backsplash in the kitchen up. I’m still in the making process so finishing will take awhile but seeing it up gives me motivation to keep working away at it.

This last glaze kiln was almost all tile but I did use the top shelf to glaze a few pieces I had ready. The dark blue glaze is new for me, as is using the dark red underglaze. The blue is very dramatic - lots of variation in color and totally matte. Quite masculine I think. The red is definitely red! I like it. Now back to glazing the next batch of tile.

In the middle of making a teapot. I’m trying to challenge myself a bit in the middle of tile making with something with a higher difficulty factor. Tea pots have lots of parts that have to be carefully crafted for function. Spouts can be difficult. Creating a spout that pours well is an art and getting a handle made that will feel comfortable for the pour takes some consideration too.
