Zsudayka Nzinga Designs

Zsudayka Nzinga Designs Terrell Arts DC is a family business run by Zsudayka Nzinga and James Terrell. Zsudayka Nzinga is a visual artist and activist.

Her artwork is largely focused on the empowerment of the woman as caretaker and ultimate lover of all things. Her images reflect stories and messages linked in what she described as, "the mythology of the urban woman". She also does murals that reflect the people of the community they are painted in, featuring "everyday heroes", people who live and work in the community or have empowering images t

hat inspire the people of the community. Zsudayka does a series of workshops alongside her art, encouraging people to feel empowered by telling their stories through, art, fashion and food. Her main workshop series is called From the Corner to the Gallery. From the Corner to the Gallery challenges people to view themselves as art and take everything they do from the corner, to the gallery.

Scenes from my studio as I prepare for my solo opening on Saturday April 5 from 3-6 at Art of Noize in DC. These drawings are on hand marbled paper. I have been really excited to discover that i am a printmaker as much as a painter. And I never gave any value to my drawings. They were just the start of a collage for me. But having people come into my studio and see the drawings and respond to them really encouraged me to consider my drawing as an element of my practice. I’ve got a drawing on view at Honfleur on hand marbled canvas. But this solo will be the first time I show works on paper EVER. And a chance to collect a new kind of work from me. These have to be seen up close. There is so much nuance and delicacy to the way they are made.

Tomorrow Phillips Collection is hosting an ONLINE meditation session from 1245-2. I will be giving a talk during the event about how American descendants of the system of slavery practiced meditation and mindfulness even on plantations centered around my two paintings that engage petit marronage- the act of temporarily leaving the plantation for self care. It’s free you just have to register for the link.

Join us for a free, 30-minute weekly meditation led by local yoga teacher Aparna Sadananda via Zoom. Inspired by the exhibition Zsudayka Nzinga: Home Coming / Home Going at Phillips@THEARC, we will practice techniques for mindful looking and thinking that we can carry with us wherever we are.
