We are thrilled to announce our second fall exhibition, "JAMES WELLING: Cento," on view in the Walsh Gallery September 25-December 12, 2026.

This exhibition focuses on more than 60 recent works by contemporary photographer James Welling (American, born 1951). The artist's photographs of ancient sites in Italy and Greece, as well as antiquities found in museums around the world, were subjected to digital and painterly alteration by the artist to achieve transformative effects. The photographs will be exhibited alongside a selection from the Museum’s extensive historic plaster cast collection of Greek and Roman sculpture.

We are thrilled to announce the first of our fall exhibitions, "Hieroglyphs to Hype: The Modern Afterlife of Ancient Egypt," on view in the Bellarmine Hall Galleries September 18-December 12, 2026.

This exhibition will explore the enduring fascination with ancient Egyptian art and culture (dubbed “Egyptomania” by 19th-century Europeans) through a selection of paintings, prints, photographs, and decorative art ranging from the early 19th century through the present day. These objects, from the humble to the refined, from the shamelessly commercial to the Afrofuturist, represent the range of artistic responses to–and misconceptions about–ancient Egyptian visual culture.

A major gift of more than 1,700 photographs has made the Fairfield University Art Museum home to the third-largest collection of fine art photography in Connecticut and the largest in Fairfield County.

Fairfield University has appointed Matt Malone, former president and editor-in-chief of 𝑨𝒎𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒄𝒂 𝑴𝒆𝒅𝒊𝒂, as its inaugural vice president for arts and culture, a newly created executive leadership position that reflects the University’s continued commitment to serving as a vital center for arts and cultural programming in the region.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for "For Which It Stands..." this spring! This exhibition brought in record numbers of visitors, and we were truly honored to share this artwork with the community.

This spring, the Art Museum hosted a special series of gallery talks featuring artists whose work is on view in the semiquincentennial exhibition, "For Which It Stands…" Community members gathered to hear directly from artists about their craft, inspiration, and the works currently on view.

In April, local artists Richard Klein and James Prosek shared their experiences perceiving the flag and how that impacted their artwork. Prosek’s "Invisible Boundaries" depicts an American flag with a bald eagle and a ring of animals representing the 50 states. He shared, “Throughout my career, the most common thread that’s carried through is the idea that humans draw lines in the landscape.”
