Founded in 2010 and accredited by the American Alliance of Museums in 2024, the Fairfield University Art Museum is one museum, comprised of two spaces: the Bellarmine Hall Galleries and the Walsh Gallery.

Silvia Marsans-Sakly, PhD, associate professor of the practice of history and Islamic world, reflects on Sarah Rahbar’s "I don’t trust you anymore, Flag #59" (2019), a mixed-media American flag assemblage that confronts themes of identity, patriotism, conflict, and disillusionment.

Recently, Retro Report visited the Walsh Gallery to film with artist Dread Scott, whose work is featured in the exhibition "For Which It Stands…" During the interview, they explored the many ways the American flag can be presented and interpreted, and what it represents to different Americans.

Retro Report, a nonprofit documentary organization that examines today’s world through a historical lens, has distributed its work through partners including PBS and The New York Times, bringing important conversations like these to audiences nationwide.

"For Which It Stands..." displays more than 70 artworks that examine depictions of the American Flag from World War I to the present day. With artwork by artists such as Jasper Johns, Faith Ringgold, Robert Rauschenberg, Shepard Fairey, Julie Mehretu, and Maria de Los Angeles, this exhibition showcases celebrations of, and responses to, the flag over the decades.
