A lifetime in music, distilled into one idea: stay present, listen, and keep playing. In the October issue of SOUND Magazine, Don Was reflects on the musical DNA of Detroit, lessons learned alongside Bob Weir and Bob Dylan, the freedom at the heart of the Grateful Dead’s music, and why The Pan-Detroit Ensemble never wants to play a song the same way twice.

That philosophy is at the center of their approach to Grateful Dead’s Blues for Allah: not a recreation, but a living interpretation shaped by Detroit rhythm, improvisation, and the chemistry of the musicians in the room.

As Was puts it, the challenge is to find your own way into the music—and make it feel alive.
